“This mission carries immense weight. We must stick to this arrangement for a full month. Distribute healing metal first to the soldiers with the most severe injuries. Things will get much easier once the clerics arrive.”
“Got it, Commander.”
Adrian and the other subordinates looked at Merrick with bright, hopeful eyes. The help had arrived right when they needed it most badly.
Merrick headed back to the base alongside Adrian at top speed.
His heart was filled with nothing but bitter distress all along the way.
Elara was still as uncontrollable as ever.
She had secretly slipped into Wasteland City without telling anyone. It was clear to him that she fully intended to take Gillian away from him for good.
The moment their spacecraft passed through the defensive shield barrier, the StarNet signal on Merrick’s wrist terminal gradually returned to normal connection.
His wrist terminal buzzed nonstop.
He quickly checked the notifications, yet none of them were sent by Gillian.
He opened their private chat window, only to see his previous message still sitting at the top with no reply from her side.
He feared that Gillian had already misunderstood him.
He could not help wishing the spacecraft could move even faster,
“Push the speed to the absolute limit and hurry back to base!”
“Black Rick, we are already traveling at maximum possible velocity.”
Merrick fell silent for a moment.
He then called Sylas.
“Sylas, have you finished your dinner yet?”
Sylas was wiping his damp hair with a soft towel, with his glasses placed on the bedside table. His sturdy, well-toned torso was half hidden beneath the white towel. “I have already eaten, Commander. Is there any business you wish to arrange?”
“How has Gillian been feeling this afternoon?”

“I cannot speak for her exact mood, but she has completed every single wound cleaning with precision all day long.”
Sylas put his glasses back on and thought things over carefully before continuing. “She does seem to carry quite a lot of heavy thoughts on her mind lately.”
“Did anything out of the ordinary happen around her lately?” Merrick asked anxiously.
“She submitted two blood samples to run kinship identification tests this afternoon. She only mentioned they belonged to a friend of hers. The final result confirmed that the two subjects are full biological sisters. Would this count as something unusual?”
Merrick’s expression instantly turned grim. He knew for certain that Elara had successfully carried out her plan.
“Got it, Sylas. You may rest early.”
He ended the call in a hurry and sent a message to Gillian. “Gillian, I will be home very soon. Please wait for me.”
Meanwhile, the message Elara had sent to him was not filled with vicious insults as he had expected, yet it still sounded tough.
“Black Rick, you are forbidden to meet Gillian starting from today.”
Merrick let out a huff and typed out. “I refuse!”
He sent the line out but withdrew it right away. He knew he could not afford to anger this formidable female in any way.
He rewrote his words in a much milder tone and sent them over instead.
“Dear Ms. Locke, true love binds Gillian and me. Please show mercy and let us stay together.”
Elara caught sight of the withdrawn message and rolled her eyes.
The bold refusal was still fresh in her mind.
How dare he harbor such wishful thinking? Anyone who tried to steal her younger sister would never be forgiven.
“Elara, come and try this soup I simmered carefully this afternoon. Pair it with this, and the taste is absolutely wonderful.”
“Thank you, Grandma.”
Elara accepted the warm soup politely and responded in an obedient tone. She took a slow sip with the spoon, and a warm glow slowly spread across her usually cold-looking face.
Gillian noticed how elegant Elara’s table manners were. It was easy to guess that the people who had taken Elara away to Capital Planet in her early years must have held extremely high social status, which

explained how they managed to erase all traces of her existence.
Elara had once told her she stayed in the Wasteland City to fulfill a promise and offer assistance to Merrick. That meant Merrick must know all about her past.
Gillian suggested that Elara have some braised beast trotter meat.
“Elara, this dish tastes amazing, too. You really have to give it a try. Grandma’s braised beast frotters are her signature specialty. Every piece is stewed so thoroughly that the meat falls right off the bone easily We usually only serve this dish on major festivals.”
“Help yourself to more food, too, Gillian. I did not bring any proper gifts for you when I/came back from Capital Planet this time. I will take you shopping along Gourmaw Road tomorrow to pick out whatever you like, alright?”
Elara smiled.
Gillian was about to agree when she remembered she had no days off to spare. “So many wounded beastman soldiers are staying in the legion for treatment. I simply cannot leave my post freely.”
“Silly girl, I have already made all arrangements in advance tonight. The ten new clerics will officially start working tomorrow. Even if we have up to five thousand patients coming for treatment every single day. they can fully handle the workload easily. I have approved a full day of leave for you.”
