Chapter 186 Old Memories Return

She had never imagined Maddox would be on the airship too, coming to Wasteland City.

Elara pulled herself out of the memory, exhaustion shadowing her eyes.

Her gaze traced his face one more time, and her heart still betrayed her with that small skip. His face was infuriatingly beautiful.

Time had only added more polish to him, more steadiness, more quiet elegance.

She mentally spat in disgust.

However elegant he looked, he was still a jade griffin who chewed people up and spat them out.

She wasn’t young enough to get dazzled by a pretty face anymore. Maybe what she had really fallen for as a girl had only been the light of someone dropping out of the sky to pull her out of certain death.

She was so close to buying her own freedom now. Why was he forcing them back into each other’s orbit?

It was completely insane.

She didn’t buy it. Six years ago Maddox hadn’t wanted her. Six years later he was suddenly willing to fight to the death for her? No way.

Every male in the Cole family had a black, calculating heart. They never let go of anything until they had squeezed every last drop of value from it.

“Master. What is it you actually want?”

That stubborn pose of hers. Was she blaming him? Blaming him for the years he had left her alone?

Maddox’s eyes went darker. His lips pressed into a thin line.

“Shadows, stand down.”

On his order, the four Shadow Guards withdrew, leaving the space to the two of them.

Maddox started walking toward Elara.

Watching the circle around her open up, Elara let the frost in her palm dissipate.

“Elara. Couple of years apart and this is what you’ve become? Was the obedience, the gentleness, all an act before?”

“Master, I am still your loyal subordinate. After all, 20 years ago you saved me from the jaws of that lizard. You came down on me like a god then. Now you’re more refined, more polished, sharper, the most powerful figure on the Capital Planet.”

Elara laid the praise on so thick it almost made her gag, but Maddox visibly preened.

“Didn’t realize my Elara still thought so highly of me.”

Inside her head, Elara wanted to gag.

The next second, Maddox’s hand rested on Elara’s head. A small smile, rare for him, tugged at his mouth.

“I hear you’ve reconnected with your grandmother and your sister. Let’s all have dinner together tonight.”

For the first time, Elara couldn’t quite breathe.

She wanted to refuse.

What he was asking was absurd. Dinner with Mabel and Gillian? She could guarantee that the second he walked in, Merrick would throw the first punch.

“This is Merrick’s territory. I’d suggest you tread carefully, Master.”

A crease formed between Elara’s brows. He wouldn’t try to use her to get to Merrick, would he?

Merrick was Gillian’s now, no matter what. Anyone going after him went through her first.

“Call me Maddox. We’ve bonded. The title needs to go.”

Elara met his smiling eyes, and her heart skipped against her will.

Had Maddox lost his mind?

“And as for that boy. He’s not a threat.”

Maddox’s smile carried meaning Elara couldn’t read. His tall frame leaned half a head down toward her. From this close she could see every line of his face perfectly clearly, The pad of his finger tapped lightly against her nose.

“I gave him a lead. He should be on his way to Firefox City by now. He won’t make it back before tomorrow. We have plenty of time to have dinner with your sister and your grandmother.”

A chill of belated panic ran through Elara. Wasteland City was locked down tight under Merrick’s watch. and Maddox had still found a crack to slip through.

“What, my Elara doesn’t want to introduce me to her family?”

Danger glinted under the warmth of his voice.

“Master, behavior like this is going to make me misread your intentions.”

Elara forced herself to look up at him. She knew his pride. She knew his arrogance. There was no way he had developed feelings for her.

She expected to meet the same mocking eyes she remembered. What she actually found was a male gaze full of something almost like hunger.

“What if I really did want you?”

What? He actually wanted her?

Maddox pulled Elara into his arms.
