“Grandma, we’ve got it.”

Freya had never actually planned to cut Merrick out of this. Wiping out the Phoenixkin in one strike would need the 9th Legion behind them.

Mabel started to say something, then stopped, her eyes drifting to Elara.

What was she supposed to do about Elara now?

Maddox’s true identity had turned out so tangled, and Elara’s fate had wrapped around his in such an ugly way. It was a cruel twist of fate. Did the heavens have something against the Sterling family ever being happy?

Elara couldn’t quite meet Mabel’s eyes. She had offered herself up as bait to win back the Cryolotus, and she wasn’t sorry for it.

She had slept with the male she had wanted, and she had gotten the Cryolotus back. No way she came out the loser on this deal.

Freya steadied Mabel, who was clearly wearing herself thin with worry, “Grandma, let me walk you to bed.”

“Mm.” The kids were grown. There wasn’t much she could do about it anymore.

As Freya and Mabel left the cabin, Freya’s voice drifted back through the door.

“Gillian, send our coordinates over to Commander Cole. Tell him to chase us down on his own. If he’s too slow, he can’t blame us for leaving him behind.”

Gillian made a small sound and turned to Elara. “Elara. What do you say?”

Elara nodded. “Merrick won’t even let us have a hot meal. Sounds like he’s actually panicking.”

Taking the airship out had been about finding a quiet place where the family could lay everything on the table and finally talk it through.

As for revenge, no one was going to treat it like a game.

Gillian quickly pinged Merrick the spot the airship would touch down at in half an hour.

“Merrick, we’ll be at this spot in thirty minutes and we’ll wait for you there for fifteen. If you don’t make it. we’re not waiting around.”

Merrick’s reply came back fast, and the content was so far over the top that no censor could have cleaned it up. Gillian couldn’t even look at it. She slammed her wrist terminal shut, face burning.

She turned her face away in disgust.

“I’m still trying to figure out how the three of you avoided getting yanked into the Blue Phoenix Arena.”

Elara studied the other three people on the airship with mild curiosity. She and Gillian had gone looking for Mabel earlier and found these three already on board, so they had simply hijacked them along with the airship.

“Strong body, fast feet, and this airship’s got an anti-psionic-capture shield set up by the White/Griffin, Behind the times, Cleric Sterling?”

Dominic gestured proudly at his bicep from the pilot’s seat.

The airship they were riding was his personal favorite.

He had read the situation the moment things turned wrong and dragged Sylas and Tristan onto the airship, planning to get Mabel out safely. By sheer dumb luck, Gillian had grabbed them too.

From the co-pilot’s seat, Tristan and Sylas had nothing to say.

Dominic had hauled both of them onto the airship, claiming his crew was all in the medical bay and there was no one to help him fly.

Lucky for them they had come along, because otherwise they would have been left back in base housing.

Tristan looked a little dazed. The silver chain dangling from his pink paw swung back and forth.

Freya was a Sterling granddaughter too, and she was single, wasn’t she? What if they tried to marry her off to him next?

Tristan was deeply annoyed with himself.

Once the airship locked into its flight path, Dominic set the cruise control. With autopilot on, three pilots weren’t necessary.

With Mabel tucked in to rest, everyone else gathered together.

They had a route to plan.

Freya projected the Blue Phoenix’s terminal display into the open air.

“From the rendezvous point with Commander Cole to the old lab base, it’s a three-day flight.”

“The Phoenixkin coming from Capital Planet will need fifteen days on their fastest interstellar ship.” Elara opened her own wrist terminal and added the enemy’s arrival window without missing a beat.

Nobody knew Capital Planet better than she did.

“Which means we have twelve days to set the trap.”

Freya knew it wasn’t a long window, but wiping out the Phoenixkin who came for them was still very much

in reach.

Gillian sat quietly off to the side, listening to Freya and Elara work through the plan.
