But everyone there knew better. She had snapped those scale parasites like chips. And she lived inside a taint core. A spot where anything else would be dead in minutes.

Gillian kept putting down the purge and coaxed the girl closer, one step at a time, toward the cryogold cage. She slipped sedative powder into the cage soundlessly, mixing it into the purge.

The girl breathed it in. She crouched inside the cage, eating the last of the purge. The open door snapped shut. A moment later, she collapsed.

It had been that easy. Nobody could quite believe it. But Gillian and Merrick didn’t waste any time. They dropped more scale parasites straight into the taint core.

If this girl had been living down there, who knew what else might be lurking?

This time, the parasite didn’t plaster itself against the wall playing dead. It bolted straight down, so fast Gillian almost lost it.

“That means nothing’s threatening it down there anymore.” Gillian let out a breath. If there’d been a whole nest of these things, one cryogold cage wouldn’t have cut it. “Merrick, where did you even get this cryogold cage?”

“When Goldspine City got flattened along with Grayson Manor, Lucian went in looking for survivors and grabbed Leo’s giant gold bed on the way out.”

“Oh. Good.” Gillian felt instantly better knowing it wasn’t more debt. Merrick’s finances kept her up at night.

Lucian seriously deserves a raise. That was fast.

She’d been mourning that wrecked cryogold bed. Turned out Lucian and the others had already snagged it.

Nicely done.

The scale parasite crawled deeper. Gillian locked on. The White Griffin streamed all the data.

The tunnel below wasn’t wide. Maybe big enough for an adult to crawl through, but smooth, like something had bored it out.

The parasite’s pace suddenly picked up. Something was ahead. It led her down a winding path through thick black mist. Then the White Griffin’s feed picked up/the sound of water.

They’d reached a pool. The steady drip told her this was either the deepest part of the taint core or dead

center.

The White Griffin’s readings spiked to max. Even cryogold wouldn’t hold up long here.

Gillian’s psionic power swept the area. The pool was filled with liquid taint.

The parasite acted like it had struck gold and dove straight in. She yanked it back. The flimsy thing started `shrieking.

She ripped out its beast crystal before it could stir up the core, and the black pool went quiet.

The interior of the taint core was broadcast to everyone. For the first time in years, they were seeing what it really looked like down there. So dark. So thick with taint.

Every gaze drifted back to the girl in the cryogold cage. How had she lived down there? And how was shy that hauntingly pretty?

The White Griffin reported. “Scans confirm the taint below is dormant. Without a major energy detonation, an eruption is unlikely.”

The data made everyone look at the flower sprite again. So she was the one messing with things down there.

Merrick flagged the location as temporarily secure.

If the logic tracked, did that mean the taint’s source was crawling with these little sprites?

That thought landed hard. All those people dead in Wasteland City because of something that looked like

this?

“Get her onto the Griffin Warship. Maximum security.”
