Chapter 215 I Trust You

Gillian tapped her fingers and sent the data over to Merrick.

“I just got spooked by how strong this Binary Parasitic Beast is,” she said.

Merrick read the report, and his face went serious. He got how bad this was.

“I didn’t expect the one we caught to be this powerful,” he said.

He didn’t hesitate. He flagged the girl in the cryogold cage with an official designation and listed every threat she posed. No one but her guards got anywhere near her.

“Gillian, if every taint core has one of these inside, we might actually have a shot at stopping the outbreak.”

“Yeah. Lucky break, I guess.”

But her eyes wouldn’t leave the girl. “A juvenile’s already level 6. What’s an adult like? Would anything even stop it?”

“Don’t be afraid. I’ve got you, no matter what happens.”

His voice was solid. It made her feel steady.

She nodded. Whatever happened, at least they had a lead now.

“Itrust you, Merrick.”

The second she spoke, she felt his gaze on her-warm and fixed. His sharp, cold face softened completely.

She trusts me.

Merrick leaned closer. His voice dropped, teasing. “Trust me with what, Gillian?”

Gillian pressed her lips together. He wanted her to stroke his ego? Fine. She’d lay it on.

“Trust that your height’s not an exaggeration.” She squinted at him, sizing him up. “Commander Cole, are you seriously the tallest guy in the 9th Legion? Be real.”

Merrick cracked up despite himself.

Am I though? Actually, maybe not.

She’s clearly not in the mood today. Won’t even toss me a compliment.

He rubbed his chin, pulled out his metal blade, and started admiring it like it was the most fascinating thing he’d ever seen. “Fine blade. Truly a fine blade.” He kept muttering praise at his sword as he walked off, and then he was gone.

Gillian blinked. She might’ve actually hurt his feelings.

The Griffin Warship flew fast. By early morning on July 20th, they hit the outer edge of the taint’s source

The warship settled into a hover.

Gillian had spent the whole night next to the cryogold cage. Merrick had stayed with her the entire time.

Her face was flushed from sleep, and the early sun lit up the fine hairs on her cheeks. She looked adorable. He wanted to brush his jaw against her skin, but he didn’t want to wake her, so he let it go. Instead, he pulled the thin blanket up over her.

The metal room was quiet, thick with a cloying sweet scent. Merrick’s brow lifted. The smell was getting too strong.

The display showed the girl in the cage was still out cold.

He stood and stepped through the divider. The beastman soldiers guarding the cage hadn’t shut their eyes all night. They saluted.

“Sir. Nothing unusual.”

“Good. Well done.”

He walked up to the cryogold cage. The girl hadn’t moved. Her dark flower buds were closed up tight. If he ignored her feet, she looked like any normal kid.

“Bring me a hallucinogenic,” Merrick said. He was gonna question her himself. These things had come out of nowhere, and he wanted answers.

“Yes, sir.”

Gillian was still half-asleep when she jolted upright. She reached out and found the spot next to her empty.

From the next room came a weird noise. Something shattering. Then the iron smell of blood hit her.

She shoved through the divider door. That thick sweet scent slammed into her first. Then she saw the room. Roots everywhere.

The girl in the cryogold cage stood with her eyes shut, face blank, while a flood of roots poured out from under her white dress and attacked in every direction. That sound had been roots whipping into metal.

Merrick had his back to her, hacking through them with his blade. The soldiers were cutting themselves free from the tangle.

Merrick demanded, “I asked you a question. Where did you come from? Tell me, or I’ll hack off every last root.”

Something was off. The girl’s face didn’t look defiant. It looked like she had no clue what he was saying.

“Merrick, I don’t think she understands us.”
