“No,” Gillian said. “Just couldn’t sleep. Wasn’t she sedated? How did she wake up and attack like that?”

“I woke her up,” Merrick said. “Gillian, you want to go lie back down?”

He didn’t want his wife watching him interrogate a prisoner.

“Watch out!”

Gillian’s face changed as she looked past him.

A thick root shot toward Merrick’s back. He spun and sliced it clean with one stroke. The arm-thick tendril dropped to the floor, dead.

“Enough!” Merrick’s temper flared.

A level 6 flower beast thinks she can fight me?

He moved fast, hacking every root that shot out of the cryogold cage into pieces.

The little flower beast inside, face blank, seemed to register that her roots were all severed. Then she opened her mouth and started wailing.

The soldiers swept the severed roots aside and cleared the room.

The girl’s crying was loud and pitiful. Merrick slid his blade away. “Crying because you lost? Shut up.”

He hadn’t even gotten the hallucinogenic into her system before she woke up. Her recovery speed was unreal.

Gillian stepped up behind Merrick, closer to the cryogold cage. The flower beast sniffed the air. Then she threw herself against the bars, facing Gillian, and started calling out in a clumsy, halting voice, “Mom. Mom.”

Gillian froze. The girl’s eyes were still shut as she cried for her mother.

Did she think I was her mother?

“Gillian, don’t get near her. She’s vicious.”

“It’s fine, Merrick. I don’t feel any hostility from her.”

But Gillian didn’t dare get too close either. She was only level 5. If the flower beast turned on her, she might not react in time. Still, she wanted to try. See if she could get through to her.

“Are you calling me Mom?”

“Mom.”

The flower beast sniffed Gillian’s scent again, more carefully this time. Then she pressed her tiny face

Gillian couldn’t figure out why the girl had imprinted on her. She thought for a moment, then let a wisp of white psionic power glow at her fingertips.

“You know this?”

The flower beast lit up at the sight of her healing psionic power. The roots beneath her crept through the bars and crawled cautiously toward Gillian. They tried to curl around her ankle.

“Mom…”

Merrick’s blade came down, resting against the root. “You hurt her, and I will kill you. Understand?”

The flower beast bared her teeth at him. She pointed a tiny finger at Merrick like she was telling on him.) then wailed, “Mom. Mom, Mom.”

She started sobbing, her little voice cracking with misery. She showed Gillian her severed roots and the milky fluid dripping from them. The sight hit Gillian somewhere deep.

“Don’t cry. I’ll heal you.”

Her white psionic power flowed down to the flower beast’s lower body. The severed roots closed up. The wounds scabbed over, and the milky fluid stopped dripping. The two thickest roots, the ones she walked on, sprouted delicate white blossoms that released a faint epiphyllum scent.

The flower beast jumped up, excited. She spun in a circle, testing her roots, and found they didn’t hurt anymore. Then she threw herself at Gillian, but the cryogold cage blocked her. She smacked the bars in frustration.

“Mom. Mom.”

“Easy.”

Gillian wrapped her psionic power around the girl’s hand and urged her to calm down. Just then, the flower beast’s stomach let out a loud rumble.

She kept her eyes shut but faced Gillian’s direction perfectly. She touched her belly and said, “Mom.” Gillian had a feeling she was trying to say “hungry” but didn’t have the word for it.

“Merrick, get some low-grade nutrient supplements. I think she’s starving.”
