Chapter 217 She Was Just a Child

Chapter 217 She Was Just a Child

“One. Two. Three. Four. Five. Six.”

Six blossoms. Does that match her level?

The thought flickered through Gillian’s mind and was gone.

“Mom?”

The flower beast grew uneasy at the silence. She sniffed the air, her ears twitching, but still didn’t open her

eyes.

Gillian hesitated. If she healed the girl’s eyes, would she try to run?

The flower beast felt Gillian’s psionic power lingering near her eyes. She seemed to think it was a game.

“Mom.”

She was so pretty. When she smiled, it was the kind of face that stopped Gillian’s heart.

A face like that. If only she really were my daughter.

Gillian made up her mind. She was just a child. She deserved to see the world, to know what light looked like. She shouldn’t be trapped in darkness forever.

A/second later, the flower beast felt a warm, tingling sensation around her eyes. Her vision had gone bad from years in the dark. Gillian fixed it.

The girl opened her eyes and saw Gillian’s face for the first time. She stared, studying her. It wasn’t the first time she’d ever seen anything. But it had been a long time since she could.

Mom’s so great.

Her eyes were luminous. Stunning.

“Mom. Mom.”

So this is what Mom looks like.

“Sir, I’ve brought what you asked for.”

A beastman soldier carried a large tray over to Gillian. The second he got close, Gillian caught the flash of killing intent in the flower beast’s eyes. She was going to kill him.

Gillian’s psionic power tightened around the girl’s roots. “No killing,” she said, firm.

The flower beast just stared coldly at the soldier. Merrick took the tray and ordered every soldier in the room to wait outside. The girl finally pulled her gaze back. But her mood had dropped. She looked tired.

“Eat.”

Gillian picked up a low-grade nutrient supplement from the tray, cracked it open, and poured it into a bowl. She held it out for the flower beast.

“If you’re hungry, you have to eat.”

The girl kept her mouth clamped shut. Wary.

Gillian took a bite herself, then offered it again. The flower beast’s eyes lit up. She opened her mouth and took a bite. Then she spat it right back out, her face full of disgust.

Gillian thought for a second. She grabbed an egg sandwich in one hand and a slab of raw beef in the other and held them both out.

The flower beast grabbed the raw beef and tore into it. That was when Gillian noticed her teeth were sharper than a normal person’s.

Merrick’s wrist terminal buzzed. A message from Sylas. The Griffin Warship had reached the final stop.

“Gillian, we’re at the taint’s source.”

“Alright. We’re heading down. Should we bring her?”

Gillian watched the girl eat happily and figured leaving her here was a bad idea.

“We’ll take her with us.”

Merrick waited until the flower beast finished eating.

As soon as she was done, she started fighting the cage again, yanking at the cryogold bars. Gillian was about to stop her when the girl suddenly went limp and collapsed.

Gillian’s heart jumped. Then she understood. “You pumped sedatives into the cage?”

“Yeah. Extra strength.”

Gillian couldn’t argue with that. The flower beast was cute, but the killing intent she’d shown toward the soldier was not normal. If Gillian hadn’t stopped her, she would have found a way to kill everyone outside that cage.

And yet she was completely affectionate toward Gillian. That meant Gillian had something the others didn’t. Her healing psionic power was the most obvious difference.

Plus the two Binary Parasitic Beasts in her belly. That had to be what confused the girl.

Merrick waved his hand, and the beastman soldiers poured back in. They hoisted the cryogold cage.

“Let’s go, Gillian.”

Merrick took the egg sandwich out of her hand and set it back on the tray.

“Merrick, did you drug everything on that tray?”
