Elias and Asher. Will they end up the same way?

For a moment, Gillian wanted to keep this flower beast. Raise her. If she could turn her into something normal, it meant her own children wouldn’t become killers either.
Her stride firmed up as she moved to catch up with the cage. But Merrick caught her hand.
“Gillian, come with me.”
He pulled her away and led her back to the couch where they’d slept last night.
On the metal side table next to it sat a breakfast tray. A bowl of hot soup and a glass of milk.
Merrick handed her the milk. “You haven’t eaten anything this morning,” he said. “Drink this first.”
Gillian blinked, surprised. She took the glass and felt the warmth of the milk through it. She realized then that he must have gotten it ready just for her. A swell of gratitude rose in her chest.
“Thank you.”
She lifted the glass and took a small sip. Perfect temperature. Rich and smooth. It spread warmth all the way down.
“And finish the soup. Don’t worry about the flower beast. She’s not going anywhere. You don’t have to rush. Drink it slowly.”
Merrick was nagging her now. It was both annoying and sweet. He’d wolfed down that dry sandwich in seconds, and now he was telling her to take her time.
When Gillian finally stepped off the warship five minutes later, her gaze tracked across the view beyond the metal passage. The sky outside was a wall of near-black. It hit her hard.
It took her straight back to the day the Grayson family destroyed her primal core. They’d cut her tendons and dumped her at the source.
She’d been in so much pain she couldn’t think. Scales had already started spreading across her body. She’d thought she would die in the taint. But the scale parasites kept her alive.
She’d survived at the source for a while, scavenging off supplies the 9th Legion had left behind. That compressed bread Merrick had just eaten? That had been the best thing she’d ever tasted back then. Without it, she wouldn’t have lasted four months until Elowen came out to check the source.
Elowen had found her, pregnant and somehow still breathing, and brought her back to Wasteland City.
The route between Wasteland City and the source had no wrist terminal navigation. The taint scrambled everything. The magnetic fields were in chaos.
1/3 Elowen had driven a mid-sized grip-buggy, following ground markers the whole way. It took four months

When she saw no one from the 9th Legion had survived, she quietly took what food was left. The trip bunk took nearly three more months.
By the time they reached Wasteland City, Gillian was 32 weeks pregnant. She joined the family corps and gave birth to two cubs.
Elias and Asher were smarter than normal from the day they were born. Their beast forms were strong By the time they were a little over a year old, they were already following her out to scavenge for food.
A lot of buildings had collapsed. The cubs would crawl inside and always find something edible.
“Gillian, what’s wrong?”
Merrick saw she had stopped. He squeezed her hand and pulled her forward. “I told you. Don’t be scared I’ll protect you.”
Gillian looked at him.
This time, no one gets left behind.
He led her into the underground base. In a place this contaminated, being underground was a hell of a lot safer than above ground. Silver-white lights made the metal room as bright as day.
“Gillian, these are all the taint cores at the source. Merrick opened the command center and let her connect the White Griffin to it. That would give her the full picture. Take a look. Where do we start?”
Gillian stared at the display. Nearly a hundred S-class taint cores glowed red. Over a thousand more clustered around them. A-class and below. Her stomach turned.
There’s this many behind the wall?”
Behind the taint wall. more cores. That was why the entire 9th Legion had died. They’d tried to buy Wasteland City a fighting chance with their lives. In her last life, it hadn’t been enough.
Yeah. But most of them are dormant. We’ve been working through them.” Merrick’s voice was steady “Gillian, don’t get overwhelmed. We need a plan. Only twelve days lett.
“Alright.
The clock was ticking. The load was heavy. Gillian pulled herself together and got to work
