Chapter 231 Might Makes Right

Lily tilted her face up into the light. “Ruby, this is so pretty.”

Ruby felt the warmth sink into her petals and let them spread wider. It really was better than the dirt.

The pool was full, so she started climbing down. “Come on, Lily.”

Lily glanced down and spotted the two figures tangled up at the base of the tower.

Oh, for crying out loud. Dad is getting worse. Where’s his hand? And where’s his mouth?

A hot spike of irritation shot through her. “Look. Mom’s in his arms again. Ugh, he’s kissing her. That’s just greedy. The second we’re gone, Dad hogs her completely.”

Ruby looked down too and let out a tired sigh. She also wanted to snuggle up to Gillian and chug a big mouthful of purge concentrate.

She’d read something about this somewhere but couldn’t quite pull it up. She tapped the little griffin on her shoulder. “White Griffin, what was that saying? The one about cannon.”

“Might makes right. A cannon’s range sets the rules.”

“Yeah, that one. Dad’s got the cannon, so he kisses Mom whenever he wants.”

That blade of his hurt way too much.

Ruby nodded. The little griffin Gillian had given her was perfect for stuff like this. Just ask.

Lily bobbed her head. “Ruby, you’re so wise. I’m jealous.”

“Hardly. There’s way too much to learn. Lily, being a person is exhausting.”

Ruby’s cheeks went pink. They had crazy talent and off-the-charts intelligence, but their tiny brains were about to burst. Her red petals flared wide and wouldn’t fold back down.

“Lily, Ruby.”

Gillian spotted them and waved them over. Merrick straightened beside her.

The sun was climbing. During the worst heat, she wanted them to rest and help train the ten new ones. Teach them how to drop into a taint core and bring up more flower beasts. Ten days to turn the taint’s source into something livable.

The two of them already looked like real leaders next to the others.

They stood in front of Merrick stiff and straight, mirroring the 9th Legion soldiers. The posture came without thinking.

As for why they called him Dad Merrick, that was a whole discussion they’d settled on their own. Sylas was way more popular.

They wanted to call him Dad Sylas and were completely on board with Gillian picking up another husband.

Why wouldn’t she want Sylas? He could fly. Never yelled. Good-looking and strong. Never acted annoyed when they got loud. He called them sweetie, smiled, and petted their heads just like Gillian did/

And most importantly, Sylas had a tail like their roots-a huge, thick root. Would theirs even get that thick when they grew up?

Lily’s eyes slid toward the distance where Sylas was still working on the taint pool. The more she looked, the better he matched Gillian.

Gillian said, “Lily, Ruby, you worked hard. Want me to refine some concentrate for you?”

Their faces lit up. They spun on their roots and took off.

On the night of July 25th, two beastmen keeping watch at the taint pool felt the ground shudder. They checked their monitors, but nothing appeared outside the pool.

“Did I imagine that?”

“I felt it too.”

The second beastman caught it just as clearly. They flagged it at once. Their clearance only covered this sector, and a tremor like that was too odd to ignore. They had to check it thoroughly to be sure.

The taint pool sat right behind them. One screw-up and it was a disaster.

At the same moment, hundreds of identical reports poured in. The White Griffin System blazed red.

Merrick and Gillian stared at the display. A dense tide of scale parasites crawled toward the pool. It hit hard but wasn’t a shock. They’d planned for this.

Drawing them out and wiping them was part of it. They just hadn’t expected this many.

In five days, the flower beasts had cleared the taint cores across a hundred miles, leaving only eighty S- class cores.
