Tristan couldn’t make sense of it. The last thing he remembered was being in Gillian’s flyer. How had he landed in the middle of a level 8 nest? His brain caught on her face.

Where is she? Did she fall? Did they eat her?

His heart hammered. Despair slammed into him. He burned through the red beast crystals still tucked in his mouth, and his glamour craft surged.

Those crystals had to be hers. She’d dropped into this nightmare.

He grabbed every parasite level 7 and below and turned them on their commanders.

They went berserk, hurling themselves into the jaws of the bigger ones, jamming their bodies into the feeding frenzy.

The level 8s turned on them in fury, and the nest exploded into chaos.

Tristan dragged the broken pink camellia free and blurted, “Where’s Gillian? Did you see where she went?”

Camilla’s voice was a thin, trembling thread. “Mom… Mom got out. I threw her… it hurts so bad. I didn’t know getting eaten hurt like this.”

Tristan’s whole body sagged. She’d made it. He couldn’t stay here.

His tails wrapped around the ruined camellia. “Little one, I’m getting you out. But no more tail-pulling. You do that again and I’m dropping you right back in.”

“Glamour Fox blooms are so pretty.”

Tucked into the soft weight of his tails, Camilla was still smiling through the pain and murmuring, but her voice came out with a wet hitch that dug into Tristan.

These flower beasts were still kids. And if Gillian and Merrick were right, if she hadn’t pulled them out, the taint would’ve rotted their brains and left them as nothing but food for these things anyway.

Tristan jumped aside. The level 8 behind him sensed the pink camellia was gone and immediately whirled and went after the fox.

Tristan had no choice but to burn another wave of glamour craft, seizing a level 6 parasite and riding its back to launch himself forward. The beast crystals in his mouth were already gone. Two full burns and every last one was spent.

Camilla, who’d been clinging by a thread, finally let go. Her body gave out, and she collapsed into her true form.
