Tristan didn’t say he’d followed because he was worried. He’d seen how bad things had gotten, and before his brain could catch up, his hands had already punched the flyer straight into the storm.
“I saw you tear off and figured something was wrong,” he said. “Caught up and found you ass-deep in a bug
nest.”
“Thanks.”
Gillian was still getting used to seeing Tristan in his true form. His talent was insane. He’d already fought his way back to his original beast crystal level and shattered the regression serum’s hold
“Not the time.” She shook her head. “We max the flyers. These parasites are way too smart. One of them turned into Merrick and baited me right out of the fight.”
“You’re saying they’ve got a human-form type?”
Tristan was thrown, but it made sense. If the flower beasts had human forms, why wouldn’t the bugs?
“Gillian, you notice something?” Tristan’s voice went tight. “Since last night, not one level 9 parasite has shown up.”
“You think they hit level 9 and turn human? Go intelligent, like us?”
Gillian’d clocked it too, but figured they just hadn’t crossed into her zone.
Tristan continued, “If you saw what I saw, I’d bet on it. They grow a body at level 5, limbs at level 7. Level 9 turning human? Not exactly a leap.”
Gillian’s blood went cold. He wasn’t wrong.
They were seconds from clearing the ridge when both flyers lurched and dropped, like something had snagged them from underneath.
They shot each other a look and split opposite ways. The flyers didn’t move. Still locked. Their eyes met again, and they got it without a word.
“Ground level,” Gillian said.
They dropped hard and skimmed the dirt at full speed. Flesh and bone scraped against the undercarriage, then something heavy rolled loose and both of them exhaled. The flyers lifted.
Tristan asked, “You think that was one of them? A human form?”
Gillian fought the urge to look back. “Probably. Don’t stop. We need to get back to people.”
Were there more of them already mixed into the Legion? If one could wear Merrick’s face, it could wear anyone’s.
Gillian tapped her wrist terminal. Nothing. Dead.

“You think they killed the signal on purpose? Why grab me?” Her brain was spinning now. “Was that whole attack on the taint pools just a test run?”
They threw every parasite below level 9 away like trash? Sat back and watched the 9th Legion, studied us, and now they’re picking us off one at a time?
Gillian hadn’t finished the thought when a thin sheet of blood slithered onto the flyer behind her. Paper- thin. Nothing but a skinned layer of tissue. Then it started to swell.
Tristan lunged and crashed into it, but the thing wrapped around him in seconds and he was losing. “Gillian, jump!”
