Gillian’s head was still thick, and everything around her blurred, but she knew she was still at the taint’s
source.
But as her vision cleared, a familiar face suddenly appeared before her.
“Gillian.” The voice came out low and gentle as the face’s owner called her name.
She blinked and focused, and a rush of pure joy surged through her chest.
Merrick. It’s him.
The relief didn’t even have time to land before her eyes caught the bite wound ripped into his throat.
“What’s wrong?” The thing wearing Merrick’s face tilted its head, and a mocking edge slipped into its voice. “Figured it out already? Sharp little thing. I wonder if a brain that quick tastes as good as it works.”
Gillian’s blood ran cold.
It wasn’t Merrick. It was the same human-form beastman who’d lured her away before.
Her heart hammered against her ribs.
What the hell is this thing?
Up close, she couldn’t spot a single flaw. Even his scent was dead-on. She’d never stood a chance.
“I caught your scent the second I picked up his on you,” he said. “Knew you’d come running if I wore this face. So tell me. Do I look like him or not?”
Gillian’s stomach dropped. Everything she and Tristan had guessed was dead right.
She couldn’t even blink. Her body was locked. All she could do was watch his hand come up and stroke her face. Not her face, she realized. The blood skin was layered over it.
A tingling numbness crawled across her cheeks, and then her face moved. Not her moving it-the blood skin pulling her strings like a puppet. Every inch of her skin prickled with horror as it tilted her head into his palm like a lover.
“Easy.” His voice dropped, almost gentle. “She destroyed your body. I’ll find you a new one.”
These parasites had bred inside beastmen and evolved into this.
The blood skin seemed to settle, and Gillian’s vision went dark as it squeezed her tighter, pulling blood from her in deep greedy draws. The thing latched onto her was eating her alive.
He didn’t let go of her face. He studied her, slow and curious. “Wasteland City really is a gift. Every cycle, it sends us the finest beastmen on this planet. You’re a female, but your flesh smells sweeter than those flower pups. All these years, I’ve never seen a female carry binary beasts inside her. I almost hate to kill
you.”

Then his face flipped. Merrick’s features twisted cold and cruel. “But you and that fox tore Riley and Avery apart. That I can’t let go.”
He slammed her head into the dirt, and everything went black for a long second.
“The fox isn’t bad either,” he said from somewhere above her. “Haven’t seen a pink-white fox in a long time. His flesh will make decent compensation for Avery. Not the worst trade. This flower runt’s in bad shape. Take her back and feed her to the young ones. Shove her in first.”
Gillian couldn’t move, couldn’t see who he was talking to, couldn’t tell where they were being shoved.
She figured it out fast. She and the blood skin got crammed into the belly of a dead scale parasite.
