He pulled his mind illusion back in a heartbeat, and his six pink-white fox tails fanned around him like a great white parasol, wrapping him tight.

Black taint spread from his arm up the limb at a horrifying rate, racing straight for his chest.

The moment it struck home, his pelt would be hers!

Then the white fox threw his head back and let out a long, anguished cry. The wave of sound blew apart most of Gillian’s psionic veil and exposed her position.

She was just one step away. Gillian pressed her hands together, ready to finish it, when someone cut her off.

A figure rushed in fast, planted himself in front of Gillian, and broke her killing strike.

George’s expression was thunderous as he stared at Tristan.

“Major Lawson, what the hell is this? Trying to kill Captain Sterling? Who gave you nerve?”

the

The pinkish-white fox was breathing hard, his eyes already dimming, as he shot George a half-dead look and lunged for Gillian with his jaws wide.

“Out of line!”

A low bark of fury cracked from the doorway. Next thing he knew, Tristan was launched into the air, hit with dozens of strikes in midair, and powerless to resist any of them.

When the dust settled, the newcomer had pinned Tristan’s head under his boot, pressed hard against the floor.

How had Lucian ended up related to such a disgrace?

Number One looked at Gillian, still standing safely on her feet, and let out a breath. Thank god they had made it in time.

Gillian took in the sudden arrival. Wasn’t this the beastman who had brought Merrick home?

“Captain Sterling, mind if I take care of him?”

Behind the bio-armor mask, the male spoke in a quiet, even tone, addressing Gillian directly and skipping past George entirely.

That caught George off guard. Since when was Number One this accommodating?

Everyone knew Number One was the coldest of Black Rick’s Sovereign Guard, the kind of male who did the job without flinching.

Why was he handling Gillian with this kind of… gentleness?

“Who are you? Get off me!”

Tristan dug both paws into the floor, straining to throw the foot off his head.

“Gillian, you cheated. Let me up and we go again…!”

His head was already pinned under a boot, and he still had the gall to bark like that?

Number One, Gillian, and George all frowned at exactly the same moment.

Before Tristan could even finish, someone knocked him out cold. He folded into total unconsciousness.

Number One quietly drew his hand back and straightened up. “I’m taking him with me. That alright, Captain Sterling?”

Gillian glanced over at George instead. The newcomer’s identity wasn’t confirmed yet, and she didn’t want to make the call alone.

George’s eyes narrowed at Number One. “Number One. Tristan tried to kill Captain Sterling. Where are you taking him? You locking him up?”

Number One? Gillian hadn’t expected this high-level beastman who had just punted Tristan into orbit to go by nothing more than a number.

“He’s a special asset Black Rick brought in personally. Any consequences come from Black Rick directly. Don’t worry, I’ll make sure Captain Sterling gets her answer. Alright?”

Number One had asked George the question, but his eyes had never left Gillian.

The weight of his gaze sat heavy on Gillian’s shoulders.

She didn’t get why he was waiting on her say-so.

But given that he ran with Merrick, and given that Tristan wouldn’t survive long even on the fastest aircraft out of here, Gillian gave him the courtesy.

“Of course. It’s for the best that the commander handles this himself.”

Number One, normally a man of few words, gave Gillian a small nod and lifted the white fox by the scruff, heading for the door.

The metal door had stayed open the entire time. Three more beastmen in matching gear stood waiting just outside.

The moment Number One walked out with the fox in hand, they fell in behind him, almost as if the whole point of the visit had been to collect that one fox.

Gillian turned to George with the question that had been nagging her. “Lieutenant Colonel Parker, who are they?”

“That’s the commander’s Sovereign Guard. Gillian, you know them?”

George took a fresh look at Gillian. How did she know members of the Sovereign Guard?

“Oh, they’re the Sovereign Guard? That explains it. They brought my partner home today.”

Gillian shelved the idea of a divorce for now. With Merrick’s Sovereign Guard standing as backup, she might just have room to do a lot more.

“Your partner’s in the Sovereign Guard?”

George let out a quiet sigh. So that was how Gillian had pulled an S-class wrist terminal. The pieces were finally falling into place.
