Sylas gave a small nod, though he still hadn’t fully unpacked what had happened in the fight.
Nobody had ever heard of a cleric who could take a hit from a beastman warrior and walk it off.
Gillian had not only weathered Tristan’s mind illusion but had walked away without a scratch. What level cleric was she, really?
Seeing Sylas stare at her in a daze, Gillian moved a step
Sylas had a striking pair of eyes.
closer.
Beneath the long lashes, the pupils were vertical slits in a deep, smoky black, still and unreadable as pools of polished onyx.
“Welcome back. Your glasses are gone. Can you see at all?”
His eyes had that blank, unfocused look of a man who couldn’t see a thing.
Sylas took a small step back. He had grown up alone and never adjusted to a stranger getting close.
Gillian didn’t take it personally. She spread her psionic power out, spotted the glasses where they had rolled into a corner, walked over and picked them up, and handed them back.
“Here you go.”
“Thanks.”
“Can you see clearly now?”
“Yeah.”
Sylas wasn’t actually nearsighted. The silver-rimmed glasses served a different purpose, but he didn’t bother explaining. He just slipped them back on.
“I found your glasses, so we’re even on this morning’s mess. Let’s call it square, alright?
Lieutenant Colonel Parker says you’ll be guarding me from here on out. If we keep acting like enemies, we’ll both be miserable.”
“Fair.”

He had no objection. As long as he kept her safe, that was the assignment.

“In that case, go put a sign on the metal door for me. Write ‘Pink-eared level 6 male fox majors and cockroaches not permitted inside. That thing keeps shedding all over the floor, and it’s a nightmare to clean.”
Gillian said all of this with a perfectly straight face, like she wasn’t joking in the least.
Sylas had no choice but to murmur back, “Mm.”
“Lieutenant Colonel Parker has already sent logistics to replace every broken chair and piece of medical gear in the hall. Should we get started?”
“Sure.”
A docile and cooperative Sylas was actually kind of charming to watch.
Gillian finished talking and started walking toward the workstation. She wanted to wrap things up early and get home for dinner on time.
Sylas watched Gillian’s back, fell a step behind, and softly repeated what she had just said.
“Pink-eared level 6 male fox majors and cockroaches not permitted inside?”
That was awfully pointed. Gillian was honestly a little childish,
The rest of the medical team had thought the same thing, until they saw what she could do. She was nothing like the image they had built up in their heads.
She was unbelievable, actually.
“You really don’t want any anesthetic?”
Gillian recognized the beastman who came in for the next procedure. He had been one of the loudest voices ripping into Tristan earlier, so she asked the question gently.
“Nah, scrape like this? Why bother? I trust your hands.”
Since his oxygen hood had been smashed, Gillian skipped using one and gave him a simple warning. “Then hold on tight.”
“Whenever you’re ready, Captain Sterling!”
Gillian’s psionic power had hit level 3.

Her power moved faster and cut sharper than it had that morning, but even the fastest blade still hurt when it sliced through flesh.
Add the scraping of bone on top of that, and agonizing didn’t begin to cover it.
This beastman, completely unprepared, let out a bloodcurdling scream, and the entire hall fell silent.
The other soldiers, shaking in their boots, started saying they wanted the anesthetic after all.
Except Gillian had already moved on to the next patient.
She was clearing them like rows of wheat at harvest time.
She didn’t even need to speak. The hundred-strong medical team split the workload, with five medics stationed up front to ask each soldier and mark where the healing alloy needed
to come out.
Then Gillian would dig it out, and once she was done, the medics applied a fresh round of healing alloy to seal the soldier back up.
Anesthetic? Not a single beastman ended up using it.
In the time it took to even take effect, the healing alloy had already closed the wound.
It left every soldier annoyed and amazed at the same time.
“They told us it wouldn’t hurt?”
