Chapter 15 Her Fortune Must Stay
Laila’s POV:
The next day at noon, the Elder Council meeting was about to begin..
Pearl grabbed my hand and asked worriedly, “Ms. Conlay, everything will go smoothly, right?”
“Yes.” I gave her a reassuring smile. “Don’t worry. Holt won’t take my money. Just stay here and finish packing. Once the mate bond is dissolved, I’ll come back for you and we’ll leave together.”
“Alright, Ms. Conlay. I’ll be waiting for you!”
Pearl nodded firmly.
I turned and headed toward the Elder Council hall on the west side.
The sun was bright along the way, and the air carried a sweet, fresh scent. I suddenly remembered that when I was little, I had visited the Ironclaw Pack with my father. We had run into Holt back then. He was only 12 years old, but already a promising young warrior
My father had even praised him, saying he had good character and that, if he k might one day become a fine general.
Now he had indeed become a general, but…
I shook my head, refusing to dwell on it any longer, and quickened my pace toward the hall.
When I reached the entrance, I saw Holt holding a letter, his expression stunned and disbelieving.
I glanced down at it and immediately saw what it said.
Make sure to keep half of Laila’s fortune.
It was signed by Maris.
“General Duffy really does have my best interests at heart. She’s even letting me keep half of my fortune.”
I couldn’t help but let out a cold laugh.
Holt snapped out of his daze, his face flushing red. He crumpled the letter and shoved it into his pocket.
“No, that’s not it! Maris would never take your money! She’s nothing like you. Her dream is to make life better for every she–wolf in the world. Including you. She wants to protect you too!”
“Is that so?”
I stared straight into his eyes. “Then after the mate bond is dissolved, you’ll let me leave with all of my assets? You won’t send soldiers to stop me?”
