Chapter 164 Tears That Wouldn’t Stop
Chapter 164 Tears That Wouldn’t Stop
Laila’s POV:
I took Raymond downstairs to bathe.

Steam rose from the wooden tub. Raymond soaked in the warm water, so well–behaved it almost didn’t feel real.
I washed his hair slowly, carefully working my fingers through the strands that had clumped together.
Some strands were too tangled, so I cut them free with scissors.
He kept his eyes closed and let me wash him without moving, like a little wolf pup that had finally found
its den.
After the bath, he changed into the new clothes Samuel had bought.
Though meant for kids his age, the clothes were still too big on him. The shoulders sagged, and the sleeves hung past his wrists. He looked like he was wrapped in a sack.
But at least now he looked like a clean, proper child.
The kitchen sent dinner up.
There were roasted lamb, mashed potatoes, stewed carrots, and fresh rye bread straight from the oven. The moment Raymond saw the food on the table, his eyes lit up–not in any normal way, but with the hunger of a wolf pup staring down prey.
He reached out instinctively, grabbed a chunk of lamb, and stuffed it into his mouth.
Then he ducked under the table.
The movement was so fast it felt like a reflex–grab, stuff, hide. It flowed in one motion. Maybe it was an instinct beaten into him.
But this time, after ducking down, he paused for a moment. Then slowly, he pushed himself up with the chair and sat back upright.
His eyes were full of tears.
I couldn’t bear to look any longer. I quickly turned my face away and wiped the tears that had suddenly spilled out. When I turned back, I was already smiling. “Eat slowly. I’ll eat with you.”
Samuel pushed the door open, intending to come in.
But the moment Raymond saw his figure, he immediately put down the meat in his hand. The gentleness in his eyes vanished, replaced by the alertness of a wolf pup facing a threat. His pupils tightened, his body leaned back, ready to attack or run at any second.
Samuel met my eyes and then raised both hands, stepping back.

“You two eat. I won’t disturb you.”
His voice was very soft, like he was calming a frightened animal.
“Thank you, Your Highness.” I stood and walked over to him.
“I’m forever in your debt.”
Samuel shook his head. “You and I will be mates soon. Why are you saying things like that?”

He paused and lowered his voice. “Go back and stay with him. I had someone prepare paper and a quill. I remember you said Raymond started learning at three, so he can write and communicate with us.”
Warmth filled my chest. I nodded. “Alright. We’ll eat first. After dinner, I’ll ask him.”
Samuel stepped out and quietly closed the door.
As soon as the door shut, the vigilance in Raymond’s eyes disappeared.
He pressed close to me and began devouring the food.
