Chapter 165 He Remembered Everything
Chapter 165 He Remembered Everything
Laila’s POV:
My tears fell even harder.
If I had known Raymond was still alive, I would have searched for him to the ends of the earth.
That way, he wouldn’t have had to suffer so much.
After a long while, I finally calmed down.
I had a servant come in to clear the dishes and bring paper and a pen.

“Raymond, I know you can read and write. Even if you haven’t written in the past two years, at least you still remember how.” I looked at him. “Tell me, how did you escape? And how did you end up in those people’s hands?”
As I spoke, I sniffed, trying to hold back the urge to cry again.
Raymond nodded and picked up the quill.
Maybe it had been too long since he last wrote. Maybe it was because of long–term malnutrition and beatings. His fingers were slightly deformed, and he couldn’t put much strength into holding the pen. I wrapped my hand around his to steady him.
After a while, he slowly began to write.
Stroke by stroke, very slowly.
Writing was hard for him. He couldn’t muster much strength, and his fingers wouldn’t fully obey him. After each stroke, he had to pause and catch his breath.
It took nearly 15 minutes for him to finish.
The letters were crooked and uneven. I had to look at them for a long time before I could make them out.
Buy. Honey. Candy.
Oh my Moon Goddess…
My tears burst out again.
Those words stabbed into my heart like a knife. The pain made my body curl slightly.
A few days before the massacre, I had returned to the family den and discussed the battle at Lovanfall Battlefield with my mother. She was worried about my grandfather, afraid he would fall on the battlefield like my father and brothers and never come back.
She was also worried about Holt. She feared that if he died, I wouldn’t live well for the rest of my life.

I had comforted her before leaving, but I was still heavy–hearted.

I worried about my grandfather, and even more about my mother. I was afraid her constant anxiety would damage her health.
Outside my mother’s courtyard, I ran into Raymond.
He had looked up at me with his small face and asked with concern, “Laila, are you unhappy?”
I had smiled and rubbed his hair. “A little, but I’ll be fine soon. Don’t worry.”
At the time, my heart had been burdened, and I had only given him that casual answer.
Maybe Raymond thought I was unhappy, so he had wanted to buy honey candy to cheer me up.
I never knew he remembered that I was unhappy.
I never knew he ran out to buy honey candy just to make me smile.
But thankfully…
Thankfully he had gone out. Thank you, Moon Goddess.
Raymond continued writing with difficulty. After a while, his wrist clearly lost strength. I told him to rest, but he stubbornly clenched his fist, flexed it a few times, and kept going.
Stroke by stroke, very slowly.
And the truth of how he escaped unfolded on the page bit by bit.
That day, after lunch, he had slipped out quietly.
Afraid of being discovered, he had asked his friend, Otis Dunn, to wear his clothes and stay inside the room, in case his mother came to check. Then he himself crawled out through a dog hole in the wall to buy honey candy.
He wrote that Otis was a stray his mother had just taken in two days earlier, about the same age as him.
He had just bought the honey candy and was planning to deliver it to the Ironclaw Pack for me when someone struck him with a stick halfway there. When he woke up, he found himself locked in a pitch- black room with several other children.
They had been kidnapped.
The other children stopped resisting after being threatened. But he fought back, and he was beaten badly for it.
Those people said the children had three possible fates. They could become beggars, be trained as pickpockets, or if they were girls, be sold into brothels.
His leg had been broken that very day.
