When I handed the three translated ledgers to Samuel, it felt like a brick sitting on my chest.

“Three thousand two hundred and eighty–seven children. Two years…

“There’s no way the Umbra Order pulled that off alone. Someone bigger has to be backing them. Otherwise, they wouldn’t have lasted this long. We need to dig deeper.”

Samuel took the ledgers and opened to the first page.

His expression darkened almost at once.

His wolf–like eyes narrowed slightly, and something dangerous flickered deep in his pupils.

“I’ll handle it from here.”

I nodded. “I’ll also ask Tracy to help look into it, too.”

After that, Samuel told me he had already sent word to the Kohlers of the Snowpeak Pack about finding Raymond.

I froze for a moment, then felt surprised by how considerate he was.

Snowpeak Pack… That was Miriam’s family.

For the past two years. I had barely dared to think about them.

The Conlays massacre wasn’t just a case of “they all died.” They died horribly.

Everybody had been chopped up into pieces, so badly that they couldn’t even be put back together.

Even thinking about it sent a cold shiver down my spine.

I heard that the old Luna of Snowpeak Pack fainted upon hearing the news.

And the 90–year–old Alpha was so overwhelmed with grief that he got lightheaded, fell down the stone steps outside his home, and died the next day.

With that kind of tragedy hanging over them, the Alpha family at Snowpeak Pack had barely shown up at any public events these past two years.

Miriam’s older brother, Samson, had never come back to our Silvermoon Pack again.

But I understood why he avoided us.

Because I did the same.

Whenever I recalled those scenes, it felt like my heart had been ripped open, bleeding profusely.

So ever since the massacre, I’ve had no contact with my sisters–in–law’s families. Even when I had to attend events at Ironclaw Pack, I would deliberately avoid them.

Because I knew we were each other’s hidden fuse.

If we didn’t meet, we could pretend we were fine.

But when we did, a torrent of pain washed over us, impossible to suppress.

Back then, Miriam told him that he and his brother were the men of the Conlays now. It was their job to protect their younger siblings and me. After that, he started acting all grown up.

He’d put his hands behind his back and walk around like he was thinking something important. He’d wrinkle his forehead and let out big sighs. He’d even drop his voice and say, “Aunt Laila, don’t worry. I’ll protect you.” Even though he was still a baby, he insisted on imitating an old alpha.

Thinking about the way he looked, I couldn’t help but laugh.

But my tears almost fell, too.

On this journey, Samuel had hardly spoken to me.

Not because he didn’t want to–but because Raymond wouldn’t allow it.
