Samuel’s POV:

I sat on the driver’s bench, listening to the occasional sounds drifting from the carriage behind me, utterly baffled.

By the Moon Goddess, I had crossed battlefields for years. There had been no shortage of formidable opponents in my life.

And yet a sevenyearold child had left me utterly confounded.

That evening, once the carriage had rolled to a stop, I extended my hand out of habit and helped Laila down. Her feet had barely touched the ground when a rustling noise came from behind us.

Raymond was climbing out.

I offered what I hoped was a disarming smile, a gesture of goodwill aimed in his direction.

In the next instant, I froze.

That small, thin figure came stumbling over and planted himself directly between us. Though his movements were shaky, he forced himself squarely into the narrow space separating Laila and me.

He spread his armsthin as reeds, fragile as if a strong wind might snap themand shielded Laila behind him.

He tilted his head back and fixed me with those amber eyes.

They blazed with pure hostility.

His lips quivered, emitting a low, guttural sound, not unlike the noise a wolf cub makes when warning off an intruder. His legs shook like withered leaves in a windstorm, but he didn’t retreat a single step.

Laila and I exchanged a glance, both of us stunned.

What was this?

Not only had my strategy failed, but it seemed to have backfired spectacularly.

Raymond’s POV:

I had truly reached my limit.

For days, I had endured it in silence.

That man had no sense of boundaries at all.

Why did he insist on treating Aunt Laila with such exaggerated care?

Passing her water, offering his hand when she stepped down, asking whether she was coldWas she

incapable of managing those things herself? She was a grown wolf, not a newborn pup.

And the worst part was, Aunt Laila seemed to respond to him.

She smiled at him, thanked him, even moved closer to him on her own sometimes.

Watching them talk outside the carriage made something burn inside my chest.

Aunt Laila was Alpha Holt’s mate. They were fated mates, witnessed by the Moon Goddess herself. Bonds like that were sacred. To break them was to betray the Moon Goddess, to invite her abandonment.

And Uncle Holt?

He might not be as tall or as strong as this man, but he was good to Aunt Laila. I remembered their mating ceremony, the way Uncle Holt had looked at her, like she was the moon itself.

But this man

I held back. I kept holding back, day after day.

Until tonight, when he reached for her again, offering his hand to help her down.

His hand was large and strong. When it closed around Aunt Laila’s wrist, the fire inside me surged straight to my head.

I scrambled out of the carriage.

Iran straight toward them and wedged myself between them.

He was still smiling.

That same smile.

Did he not realize how frightening he looked? His mouth curved upward, baring his teeth, but his eyes remained cold. It was the same expression those men had worn before they struck us.

Tight, unnatural, promising pain.

It was the face of an evil spirit.

And he expected me to believe he was kind simply because he showed me his teeth?

Dream on!
