Chapter 173 I Don’t Understand
Laila’s POV:
Raymond stared at Samuel just like that, a low growl rumbling in his throat.
Samuel raised both hands and slowly took two steps back.

He looked completely helpless. “Raymond Conlay, I swear to the Moon Goddess, I’m really not a bad guy.”
Raymond’s eyes widened even more. “Ah!”
Samuel turned to look at me. “What does that mean?”
“He’s telling you to stay farther away.”
“… Okay?”
Samuel kept his hands up and took another step back.
“Trust me. I’m really not a bad guy. I can protect you and Laila. I—”
“Ahhh!”
Raymond roared angrily, the whimper in his throat getting louder.
Samuel sighed. “And what does that mean?”
I explained, “Uh… He says you’re a bad guy…”
“… I don’t understand, Laila.”
Samuel rubbed his forehead.
“Me neither.”
I shrugged helplessly. “Forget it. Let’s just go inside and eat. By the Moon, I have no idea why he dislikes you so much.”
Once we entered the tavern and sat down across from each other at the table, Samuel ordered a glass of water from the server. Then he lowered his head and stared at the glass.
After staring at it for a while, he started touching his face.
First his cheeks, then his chin, and finally he even pinched his ears.
I had no idea what he was doing, but since Raymond was watching him closely, I didn’t ask.
After dinner, once I had coaxed Raymond to sleep, I took out those three booklets again.
I had translated less than half of the contents, even after trying my best. That was only possible because

most of it was trade records with patterns I could follow, which made them easier to decipher.
The remaining half, however, was much more complicated. I still couldn’t understand it.

It seemed I’d have to find time to return to Moonlight Academy. The library on the fifth floor had books about Ancient Friselian. But since the language was so obscure and difficult, almost no one studied it.
Thinking about that, I pulled out the single page that had been torn out separately and tried translating it.
But…
There were far too many letters I didn’t recognize. I couldn’t even piece together a full sentence. So I set it aside for now. I’d deal with it once I got back to Moonlight Academy.
Besides, the academy also had plenty of books about curses.
Maybe I could look into the curse on Samuel while I was there.
There were too many things to do. But right now, the most important thing was getting Raymond back safely so Rowan could examine him.
Still, why did he have such strong hostility toward Samuel?
“Maybe he can smell the evil aura of the curse on Samuel,” Nita said inside my mind. “Some pups can sense bad omens.”
“I don’t think that’s it…”
I frowned, though I had no better explanation.
A breeze drifted in through the window, carrying a familiar scent. Samuel was outside.
A little surprised, I turned my head and saw him leaning against the edge of the water vat in the courtyard, muttering to himself.
Curiosity got the better of me. I twitched my ears and focused Nita’s power on my hearing.
“What exactly went wrong?”
His voice floated inside, filled with genuine confusion.
“Am I not handsome enough?
“But I’m not ugly either, right? I’ve got eyes where eyes should be, nose where the nose should be…
“No matter what, I’m still more handsome than Holt, right?”
I almost burst out laughing.
Raymond’s rejection had gotten him questioning his own looks. He was the hero of the Battle of Vagen who reclaimed lost territory. Yet he was standing outside in the middle of the night, studying his reflection
