I rubbed his fluffy head. It was warm under my palm, but my chest felt tight and sour, like something was stuck there.
I had to make him believe me.
Not for Samuel’s sake, but so this pup would know that I hadn’t been abandoned or left wandering the wilderness alone–that I had found a place to belong.
I began slowly, “Prince Vance is a general just like your grandfather and your father. He fights on the battlefield and protects our land. He’s incredibly powerful–he even accomplished something your grandfather once couldn’t.”
As I spoke, memories of the battlefield rose in my mind. I saw Samuel charging through enemy lines, and the way he carefully carved the names of my father and brothers one by one…
“He truly reclaimed our homeland, Vagen. He’s a hero. And he also helped me find you.

But I couldn’t tell Raymond that.

Raymond stared at me for a long, long time.
Then he lowered his head and wrote one final sentence before turning the notebook toward me.
“Alright then. If he ever treats you badly, I’ll bite him.”
I couldn’t help laughing as I pulled him into a hug. “Deal!”

Laila hadn’t lowered her voice when she spoke. Samuel was outside driving the carriage and had heard every word.
Even though he didn’t know what Raymond had written, he heard everything Laila said.
She said she liked him!
By the Moon, she liked him!
The corners of his mouth kept lifting.
