The next afternoon, Samson arrived at the Silvermoon Pack.

Laila thought he had come to see Raymond, but Raymond had just fallen asleep. She went to greet Samson first, planning to ask him to sit and wait.
Before she could speak, Samson spoke first.
“Laila, there have been rumors outside lately. People are saying your private life is a mess. Several packs even jointly protested your mate bond with Prince Vance. Faulkner asked me to help investigate, and His Majesty also ordered me to look into it immediately.”
Laila froze for a moment. She hadn’t expected that topic.
“I arrested a group of people,” Samson continued. “One of them confessed. The person behind it is the personal maid of the Frostfang Pack’s Luna.
“I know about the matters between the Conlays and Estelle. That’s why I came to ask you today. Do you plan to confront her openly, or settle it privately?”
“Privately?” Laila repeated in surprise.
“Yes.” Samson nodded. “You’re going to marry Prince Vance, right? If that happens, you’ll have to treat Estelle as your aunt. It depends on whether you want to damage that relationship. If you’re not afraid, I’m not afraid of her either.”
Laila lifted her eyes and looked straight at him. She took a slow breath. “Thank you. But I believe Estelle didn’t do this. It might have been her daughter, Jenna. We argued a bit at that banquet. Maybe she couldn’t swallow her pride and decided to smear my name.”
Samson nodded. “I understand. Even if this case blows up, it won’t hurt Estelle at all. She could easily push a scapegoat forward and clear herself. As for Jenna, I’ll send someone to question her.”
“Thank you,” Laila said, standing to express her gratitude.
“It’s nothing,” Samson replied with a faint smile.
He stood there, studying her carefully for a long moment. His eyes slowly turned red. “Laila, your father and brothers… No, I should say everyone in your family would be proud of you.”
Laila’s throat tightened.
Samson looked away, as if trying to control something. After a pause, he said, “When you broke the mate bond with Holt, we only heard about it afterward. My mother wanted to send someone to check on you, but she worried that you…”
“I know. I understand. I really do.”

Her voice was thick, as if something were stuck in her throat. Her eyes had turned red as well.

They stood there in silence, both trying to steady the emotions rising inside them. The memories of bloodshed were too vivid. Those scenes would probably haunt their families for the rest of their lives.
In the end, Samson was the one who spoke first. “… I should get going.”
“Wait, don’t you want to see Raymond?” Laila quickly called out.
Samson’s expression darkened instantly.
It was a look that was hard to describe. It wasn’t anger or sadness, but something that was being forcibly suppressed and was about to break down.
“Laila, don’t say that again. Raymond is already dead. I buried him myself.
