Laila knew they had this misunderstanding. She had said before that she understood, but not fully.
When she first received Samuel’s letter, she left for Lunaris without a second thought. On the way, she kept telling herself not to hope, yet she went anyway, because not going wasn’t an option; she simply couldn’t bear not seeing him.
Even if the chance was one in ten thousand, she had to confirm it herself.
But Samson wouldn’t even look.
Laila’s temper flared.
She didn’t speak. She turned, pulled back the carriage curtain, and lifted Raymond into her arms. She stood firmly in front of Samson.
Her voice was cold, like moonlight on snow. “At least look. On the way here, Raymond wrote in my palm. He worried you all would reject him. I told him you wouldn’t.”
Samson’s brow furrowed even tighter. He resisted her to force a stranger child to come to him and expect him to admit it as Raymond.
But his eyes moved toward the boy instinctively.
Just one look, and he immediately knew how wrong he had been.
His breath caught.
Too much alike.
Even if the boy was thin and frail, nothing like the chubby, adorable Raymond of the past, those eyes, that brow, and that shape of his slightly pursed lips were all too familiar.
Samson’s lips trembled. His eyes reddened.
“Raymond?” he whispered hoarsely, almost not his own voice.
Tears fell from Raymond’s eyes.
He squirmed in Laila’s arms, trying to get down. She placed him on the ground. He steadied himself and looked up at Samson.
Then he lifted his hands.
Two small hands, palms facing Samson, tapped lightly three times.
Then he pressed his right hand to his chest, palm inward, and slowly traced a circle. It was the shape of the
moon.

Samson’s eyes went completely red.
Only he and Raymond knew that gesture.

A month before the incident, he and his wife had gone to the Conlays to see his sister and Raymond. That night, the moon shone brightly. He held Raymond in the yard, staring up at it.
Raymond asked, “Uncle Samson, what’s inside the moon?”
“Wolves and ancestors,” he had answered.
Raymond asked, “Can I see them?”
He smiled. “When you’re older, you’ll be able to, once your wolf spirit awakens.”
Raymond had lifted his little hand, tapped three times seriously, then pressed it to his chest and drew a moon. That was a secret signal they agreed on–a promise that when Raymond’s wolf spirit awakened, Samson would personally perform the ceremony.
Later, life got busy, and Samson nearly forgot.
But Raymond hadn’t.
