Chapter 198 Why Are You So Good to Me?

Setting bones was something she had done countless times back when she served as a military doctor. She could practically do it with her eyes closed.

Her fingers moved slowly along Raymond’s leg bone, inch by inch. Once she located the exact spot, she carefully adjusted it back into place.

Raymond was already drenched in sweat from the pain. His entire body trembled uncontrollably. He gripped Samuel’s wrist tightly, his nails digging deep into the flesh until blood began to seep out.

The pain of a broken bone was real.

The painkiller didn’t do much. He could still feel the sharp, piercing pain.

Even though the injury was in his leg, it felt as if his whole body was being torn apart.

After the bone was set, Rowan began applying medicine on Raymond.

She placed two thin wooden boards along the injured leg to hold it steady, then wrapped it tightly with bandages. Until the bone healed, Raymond would have to stay in bed.

Rowan’s special medicine worked extremely well. She had personally prepared it herself, and it could not be bought anywhere outside. The medicine helped speed up bone healing. Combined with healing potions, Raymond would probably be able to walk again in around ten days.

After his leg was secured, Raymond drank another vial of painkiller potion. This one contained calming ingredients that would help him fall asleep. When he woke up, the pain would be much lighter.

The people waiting outside had all heard Raymond’s cry of pain, and their hearts instantly tightened.

The pain must have been unbearable for him to cry out like that.

Laila paced back and forth anxiously, her eyes locked on the door.

Samson looked calm on the outside, but inside he was just as worried.

It felt like a century had passed before the door finally opened. Samuel walked out first.

Laila rushed inside immediately. Raymond was lying on the bed, already asleep.

Rowan raised a finger to her lips and said softly, “Let’s step outside and let him sleep. He is a very brave child.”

Only then did Laila notice that Samuel’s wrist was covered in blood. One look made it clear Raymond had caused it while gripping him.

However, werewolves had strong healing abilities. The wound had already closed. Only the dried blood remained because he didn’t have time to wipe it off.

Her heart trembled slightly as she said, “Thank you for everything, Your Highness.”

Samuel smiled and reassured her, “There is no need to thank me. Raymond did great. He endured it.”

Laila pressed a hand against her chest. “When I heard him cry out like that, it really scared me… Come with me and wash your hands.”

Seeing the blood on his wrist and the back of his hand made her feel uneasy. There was guilt in her heart, and gratitude too.

Samuel nodded and followed her.

After he finished washing his hands, Pearl came over and said that Samson and the others had already left. Doctor Rowan had said Raymond might remain unconscious for an entire day, so they decided to come back tomorrow to visit him.

Laila nodded and let out a quiet sigh of relief. “It’s probably better that they head back first. I honestly do not have much to say to them. If they stayed, I would have to keep them company.”

It would be rude to leave guests alone and hide away by herself.

Samuel asked, “If I stay here, will you feel uncomfortable?”

“Of course not.” She looked slightly surprised. “You and I are comrades–in–arms, and we are also engaged. We will be spending time together in the future anyway.”

She smiled gently as she said, “Besides, why would a fiancée have to feel uncomfortable in front of her fiancé?”

Samuel rolled his eyes slightly. Now that she had said that, he was the one who felt uncomfortable.

Laila almost laughed out loud. She quickly said, “Even though you always say I should not thank you, I still have to thank you. Without you, Raymond would still be under those people’s control right now. He would be begging on the streets, constantly getting beaten, starving, and freezing.”

As she spoke, her eyes turned red. “I’ve heard that disabled child beggars like him rarely live past the age of ten. With the constant beatings, hunger, and cold… their bodies grow weaker and weaker. Sometimes even a small illness can take their lives. Or on some especially cold winter night, they can’t endure the cold and simply freeze to death.”

Her voice trembled. “I can’t imagine what kind of quiet death Raymond might have suffered if he had never met you. His body might have been thrown somewhere in the wilderness and become food for wild dogs. I have dreamed about scenes like that several times.”
