I tapped the tip of Pearl’s nose. “I know you’re angry on my behalf, but my mating ceremony is almost here. There’s no need to let people like that ruin my mood.”

“But Ms. Conlay, they…”

“Enough.” I cut her off. “That’s it for now. We’ll deal with it later.”

Honestly, people like that weren’t even worth arguing with. I didn’t take the matter to heart at all and just focused on everything related to the mating ceremony.

Pearl, on the other hand, disappeared early the next morning. Martha said she’d gone out and claimed she had a surprise for me.

I was far too busy to go looking for her. The wedding gown from Veles Atelier had also been delivered, and I spent the entire day trying on dresses, testing makeup looks, and handling one miscellaneous task after another. I was so busy that even drinking water required one of the maids to remind me.

It wasn’t until that night, when I was about to go to bed, that I remembered I still hadn’t seen Pearl all day.

“Martha, where’s Pearl? She hasn’t come back yet?”

Martha froze for a moment, then quickly replied, “Not yet, Ms. Conlay.” After a pause, she added, “Oh, this is my fault. I’ve been so busy I forgot. Pearl said when she left this morning that she wouldn’t be back until tomorrow.”

“Oh, is that so?”

I scratched my head. I was so exhausted that I didn’t think much of it. “Then I guess I’ll have something to look forward to tomorrow. I wonder what kind of surprise she’s bringing me.”

After saying that, I went to sleep. What I didn’t see was Martha hurrying away, her face full of

worry.

Early the next morning, I woke up with an uneasy feeling for no reason at all. Without thinking, I called for Pearl, but Irene came instead.

“Where’s Pearl?” I asked. “She’s still not back?”

“Uh… that’s right, Ms. Conlay.” Irene smiled as she answered, but the smile looked as if it had been carved onto her face with a knife. It was so stiff it was frightening.

I frowned. “What happened?”

Irene shook her head hard. “Nothing! Ms. Conlay, Pearl is really fine!”

My frown deepened. That girl had clearly gotten herself into trouble again. I couldn’t help sighing. “… Tell me. What happened to her?”

“Ms. Conlay, tomorrow is your mating ceremony with Prince Vance. Maybe we should first…”

“What happened to Pearl?”

My voice rose before I could stop it. “You know what she means to me. Without her, I won’t attend this mating ceremony.”

The moment I said that, Irene’s face changed completely. The next second, tears rolled from her eyes.

“Pearl… Pearl is still being treated…”

“What?”

My vision nearly went black. I never could’ve imagined hearing something like that.

Crying, Irene explained everything. Pearl had been brooding over what happened yesterday at Cloria’s, so she’d gone to Ironclaw Pack early that morning to settle the score with Freya.

Under normal circumstances, Freya hadn’t even awakened her wolf spirit yet, so she shouldn’t have been able to beat Pearl, a beta. But for some reason, Freya had two beta–ranked males with her, and they’d used some kind of poisonous drug.

Pearl had managed to make it back covered in injuries before collapsing. Rowan had worked all night to save her, but she still hadn’t woken up.

“Take me to Pearl. Now!”

Without a second’s hesitation, I shifted into my wolf form, and with Irene leading the way, I rushed to Rowan’s cabin.

After shifting back, I looked at Pearl lying on the bed with her face deathly pale and her lips tinged purple, and tears began pouring down before I could stop them.
