Chapter 240 She’s Dying

Although the poison had been removed, Pearl didn’t wake until the next morning.

When she heard that Laila had canceled the mating ceremony to save her, she cried so hard she fainted on the spot. Laila had no choice but to lie and tell her that bringing her here had been done with Samuel’s consent. Only after repeatedly assuring her that this wouldn’t affect her relationship with Prince Vance did Pearl finally calm down.

But her body was still terribly weak. No one knew what kind of poison it had been, and even though Pearl was a beta werewolf with relatively strong healing abilities, her recovery was painfully slow. So Laila made the decision to take her to Moonlit Valley to rest. It would also give her a chance to visit her aunt Elyse.

Pearl stayed quiet the whole way there. The old liveliness was gone, and she seemed to be carrying guilt the entire time. Laila wanted to comfort her, but she didn’t know how, so in the end, she said nothing.

Moongleam Lake was close to Moonlit Valley, and they arrived in half a day. Finding Elyse took a little longer.

And once they did, Laila fell into a long, stunned silence. Even Pearl’s eyes widened in shock.

“H–how… how did Ms. Harmon end up like this?”

They hadn’t seen her in a little over two years, yet Elyse now looked like rotting deadwood, emaciated to the point of pity, without a trace of vitality left in her.

Her cheeks had hollowed in. Her eyes looked huge and empty. She lay in bed as if she had no weight at all. The blankets had been piled thick over her, and a heater burned in the room, yet she was still trembling. It was as though she didn’t even recognize Laila. She stared at her for a very long time, her eyes as still as a dried–up well, without the faintest ripple.

“What happened?”

Laila’s lips trembled as she spoke. She turned to the wolf doctor keeping watch at Elyse’s bedside, Wren Calloway. She was Rowan’s apprentice. Rowan had told Laila before that she’d arranged for Wren to come help Elyse recover.

Wren sighed and slowly began to explain.

“When Ms. Harmon left Silvermoon Pack, her condition had actually improved a great deal. But once she returned to Bloodmoon Pack, she was constantly upset, and her health worsened by the day. Alpha Damian never cared about her at all. Even when he was mating with his other breeders, he made no attempt to hide it from her.

“Ms. Harmon’s two daughters didn’t care whether she lived or died either. Instead, they grew close to a breeder named Delilah. She’s the one Damian dotes on most.

“Later, Delilah even told Ms. Harmon about you and Holt breaking your mate bond. Ms. Harmon was so consumed with guilt, feeling she’d recommended the wrong man in the first place, that she coughed up blood on the spot. After that, her condition worsened sharply.

“Delilah said Moonlit Valley was a good place for Ms. Harmon to recover, so Damian forcibly sent her here.”

“That’s outrageous!” Viola burst out angrily. “Those two just wanted to play happy couple on their own!”

Laila was furious too. Damian was worse than an animal, treating his own mate like this. But now wasn’t the time to go after him.
