The moment Holt heard the news, he nearly wanted to run too. His ceremony with Victoria was scheduled an hour later than Laila and Samuel’s, giving the nobles just enough time to attend both. But now his thoughts were in chaos. One moment he was wondering why Laila had run. The next, he was wondering whether it was because of him.

Everyone outside was saying it was for him. As for Samuel’s claim that she’d gone to save someone important… Who? Raymond? Raymond was fine. To Holt, that was nothing but an excuse.

So Lai a still had him in her heart after all? Even after all those cold, ruthless things she’d said, she still loved him? Then if he stopped his own mating ceremony right now, found Laila, and confessed everything to her, would he still have a chance?

In an instant, Holt’s heart blazed hot. He had to fight the urge to shift and leave, to go ask Laila why she’d run from the wedding.

If Laila didn’t love Holt, then she never would’ve chosen to become his Luna in the first place. She wouldn’t have waited for him for a whole year, managed Ironclaw Pack with her own wealth, or treated Elara’s illness. And now, she wouldn’t have run from her wedding.

Damn her. Back then, when Victoria had gone to question her, Laila had seemed so calm, as if she were completely over Holt. So what was she doing now? Running from her wedding? Trying to lure Holt into running too?

The words hit him like a bucket of ice water. Holt stared at Victoria, and at last, the fever in his head cooled.

Laila knew nothing of what was happening in Frostwind Pack or Ironclaw Pack. Her only thought was to reach Moongleam Lake as fast as possible.

Thankfully, just as Viola had said, they arrived at Moongleam Lake in two and a half days.

The moment they got there, Laila lowered Pearl into the water beside the stone wall. At once, a school of silvery–white fish swam out from the cracks in the rocks, gathering so densely it was almost startling. They surrounded Pearl’s ankles and calves, pecking gently at her skin with their soft little mouths, one touch after another, like countless tiny kisses.
