Laila shifted back into human form. Her lips moved, but only one word came out.

“Samuel?”

Samuel hit the ground in a roll and shifted as well. He stared at Laila as if afraid she might run again. “Yes. It’s me.”

Laila’s eyes burned. “Why did you come here?”

“Because you’re here.”

Laila’s heart slammed hard against her ribs, so hard it hurt. But in the next instant, she remembered that there was still another woman in Samuel’s heart, and she warned herself not to be shaken. She clenched her fingers hard, forcing that frantic pounding back down.

She lowered her eyes and desperately tried to wipe every trace of emotion from her face, but her eyes refused to cooperate. Hot tears still spilled over.

Samuel panicked at once and stepped forward. “What happened? Was Pearl beyond saving?”

“No. Pearl’s fine.” Laila turned her head away, her voice catching in her throat. “It’s my aunt. Elyse isn’t going to last much longer.”

Samuel’s heart twisted in pain. He lifted a hand to wipe away her tears, then cupped her face. “Let’s go in and see her.”

Before coming here, he’d meant to keep a straight face and pretend to be a little angry. And he really had been angry. Not because she’d given up the mating ceremony for Pearl. What angered him was how quickly she’d said the words to cancel the mating ceremony. In her heart, was he really something that could be cast aside so easily?

But the moment he saw Laila, saw the tears in her eyes, every trace of that anger vanished.

When Elyse saw Samuel appear holding Laila’s hand, tears immediately began streaming down her face. She wouldn’t mistake it. The love and tenderness in Samuel’s eyes when he looked at Laila were impossible to hide, and he had no intention of hiding them.

Elyse had originally worried that Samuel might look down on Laila because her family was gone and could no longer offer him any support. Now she was at peace.

Samuel said, “Please rest easy, Elyse. I will treat Laila well.”

“At ease, yes. I’m at ease now.” Elyse nodded again and again, so happy that no matter how she wiped her face, the tears wouldn’t stop. For her, Samuel’s arrival felt like salvation. All this time, she’d felt she had failed Diana. If she hadn’t pushed so hard back then, insisting that Holt was the best mate the Moon Goddess had bestowed, then maybe Diana never would’ve agreed to let Laila marry him. After all, the Ironclaw Pack stood several levels below Silvermoon Pack in strength. But now it was all right. Laila had found a better mate. After she died, she would at least be able to face Diana with a clear conscience.
