Laila nudged at the grass on the ground with her foot. “Because I left at the last minute and made you lose face in front of everyone. I know people are going to talk. They’ll say I still can’t let go of Holt, and that’s why I ran from the wedding.”

“Is that true?” Samuel asked.

Laila immediately looked up. “Of course not!”

Samuel smiled. “Then that’s all that matters. I believe you, and I understand you.” He looked at her and spoke slowly. “You don’t need to feel guilty, because if I were in your place, I would’ve left for Pearl too. I feel the same way you do. Pearl’s life matters more.”

Laila couldn’t say a word. Her eyes were already beginning to redden again. In the back of her mind, Nita muttered, “Well, that was actually pretty well said.”

Samuel didn’t say anything more after that. He only made one thing clear. “Laila, our arrangement still stands.”

After saying that, he glanced at the sky. It was getting late. No matter how reluctant he felt, no matter how much more he still wanted to say to Laila, he truly had to leave. Luke was still back in Frostwind Pack pretending to be him, but that wouldn’t hold for much longer.

‘When you return, we’ll choose another date for the mating ceremony.”

The moment he finished speaking, Samuel shifted into wolf form and hurried off. Laila stood there for a long time, staring after him as his figure vanished into the night.

in her heart, she found it a pity that she’d met Samuel so late. What felt even more regretful was that the woman in Samuel’s heart wasn’t her. Otherwise, she felt they truly could’ve lived a very happy life together, because he really was such a good, good man.

The next morning, Laila was delighted to discover that Elyse could actually drink her medicine by herself now, and she finished all of it. Before, she’d always managed half at best before vomiting the rest up. For the first time, Laila felt there might truly be hope for her recovery.

When Elyse saw her come in, she beckoned. “Laila, come here.”

Laila sat down beside the bed and took her hand. It was still a little cold. But that was alright. Everything was going to get better.

Elyse looked at Laila for a long while. Only after Wren and the others had gone out did she finally speak. “Laila, remember this. If t die, don’t go looking for trouble with Damian. Just live your own life well.”

“What nonsense are you saying? Your condition is improving. It’s only going to keep getting better. How could you die? Don’t say things like that.”

“Everyone dies eventually.” Elyse smiled, but there was too much bitterness in her eyes, far too much. “Sometimes living is tormenting. Dying is the release,”

“Elyse!” Laila’s face hardened. “Stop! I don’t want to hear it.”
