The moment she saw Laila’s smile, a wave of disgust surged up from deep within Estelle. Her face was so much like her mother’s.
Both of them were despicable.
Laila’s smile didn’t fade. “We came here openly to reconcile the accounts. I don’t understand why you’re making such a scene… Unless there’s something in those accounts you don’t want anyone to see? After we verify everything at Blackrock Pack, Princess Morgana, you really should host a banquet and let everyone hear the full story.”
Jenna immediately bared her teeth and snapped, “Stop slandering us! What ‘something to hide‘? We’ve shown Morgana the books every single year!”
“What a coincidence! The books you sent her and the ones I found at Cloria’s are completely different.” Laila’s voice sharpened. “The ones you submitted show losses. The ones at the store show profit. Tell me, does that sound suspicious to you?”
Jenna’s frustration spiked. She almost wanted to shift into her wolf form and tear Laila apart. “Why are you yelling? This is Frostfang Pack, not your Silvermoon Pack, and definitely not Frostwind Pack!”
A chill settled over Laila’s gaze. “And what if it is Frostfang Pack? Does that mean this is a place where reason doesn’t matter?” She turned slightly. “If that’s the case, there’s nothing left to discuss. Princess Morgana, let’s go.”
Before she could take a step, the cup in Estelle’s hand smashed onto the ground, shards scattering everywhere.
Her voice cut through the room like a winter gale. “You want to reconcile accounts? Fine. Let’s do it.”
Jenna spun toward her, alarmed. “Mother!”
How were they supposed to check this? How could they check this at all?
Estelle’s wolf eyes sharpened. “Guards, summon every accountant in the den. I want to see exactly how that store manager managed to deceive everyone.”
Laila’s lips curved slightly. “Wise decision, Luna Estelle. If it turns out the manager embezzled funds, he should be sent straight to the Justice Department.”
Estelle stared at her, frost gathering in her eyes.
If that man reached the Justice Department, he would spill everything. Trying to pin this on him alone wouldn’t work.
But in the end, he was Jenna’s man. If Laila took this matter to Blackrock Pack, both her and Jenna’s reputations would suffer.
And this wasn’t just about money anymore. If things escalated, it would become a case of defrauding a royal princess. Even Jenna wouldn’t escape punishment under the kingdom’s laws. She might not be imprisoned, but she’d be publicly disgraced and cursed by commoners.
Worse, Blackrock Pack was already looking for an excuse to dissolve her mate bond. Wouldn’t this hand them exactly what they wanted?
Still, returning the money was out of the question. The shop had already run its course anyway. Its reputation was ruined, and it was built on quick profit, so it was never meant to last. She could just hand the shop over to them, and that had been the plan all

along.
With her mind made up, the “account check” suddenly moved very quickly.
After all, she already knew the numbers.
Seven or eight accountants bent over their ledgers, calculating nonstop, claiming they could settle everything within five hours.
No refreshments were served in those five hours. No tea, no pastries. And the fireplace was deliberately left unlit, leaving the cold to creep upward from the floor, biting from toes to skull.
Estelle and Jenna held warmers in their hands. Meanwhile, Laila and Morgana had nothing.
Laila, as an Alpha, barely felt the cold, but Morgana was different. Her wolf spirit hadn’t awakened yet. Before long, her lips turned pale from the chill. She called out to Estelle several times, asking her to have the fireplace lit. Each time, Estelle agreed, giving the order again and again–yet no one ever came.
Even a fool could see that it was intentional.
Morgana shrank in on herself, instinctively edging closer to Laila.
