A week later, two of Stick’s old college friends showed up on rented horses.

Stick’s eyes widened. “You really rode horses all the way here?”

One of them replied, “Yeah, we rented them for the trip.”

Stick let out a breath, glad they hadn’t blown a fortune on travel.

Both women wore matching outfits: thin cotton jackets and plain white button–down shirts.

Though they seemed to be around twenty, their mature style and the weathered texture of their skin exposed years of hardship.

Their teacher never stopped taking in strays, so their paychecks always fell short, but none of them ever complained.

Stick brought them to Laila. As soon as she saw them, Laila called out, “Bex, Rockie!”

Both women were Alpha wolves.

Viola dashed over to greet them, her excitement obvious.

Stick’s teacher had taken them in as children. Bex was left in a basket, Rockie showed up with only the clothes on her back and a single rock. Bex’s full name was Basket Starlight, a nickname from her childhood, but she switched to Bex as she grew older. Rockie never changed her name.

“Hey, Laila. Hey, Viola.” Both women smiled warmly, recognizing old classmates right away.

Bex turned to Stick. “He hasn’t caused any trouble, has he? If he has, just let me know and I’ll deal with it.”

Stick groaned. “Bex, give me a break. I run training for Frostwind Pack’s security now. I’m completely trustworthy.”

Bex shot him a silent look, her attention fixed on Laila.

She only smiled after Laila praised Stick’s work. “Good.”

Laila and Viola exchanged a look, puzzled that Bex’s first words were about Stick.

They soon learned the story: after Stick won a big fight in Vagen and earned prize money, he spent it on lipsticks for every girl at home. He wanted his sisters and friends to feel beautiful.

His teacher had scolded him harshly for wasting money.

That was why Stick had left home to find work.

After so many lectures, he didn’t dare go back.

Her voice grew louder as her theory took shape. “Didn’t they say it was someone close to Freya who hurt the housekeeper? If Freya’s friends were so tough, I’d have sent them after Laila long ago!”

“Mom!” Holt’s face darkened.

“Don’t say that about Laila! She’d never do anything like this!”
