Laila woke up early. After breakfast with Raymond, she got in the car with Viola, Stick, Bex, and Rockie and headed for Thunder
Pack.
Stick took the wheel.
Laila sat in the back and started briefing Bex and Rockie, her tone sharp and serious.
“We’re not the ones picking fights, and we’re not throwing the first punch. But don’t let that woman Tiffany anywhere near Lillian. If Shawn storms into Lillian’s room and makes her cry, drag him out immediately.
“Every meal, every pill Lillian takes, double–check everything. Rockie, you know some basic medicine, so help keep her healthy, but don’t worry about cooking up potions yourself.
“If anything dangerous comes up, or you can’t handle something, one of you stays with Lillian and the other runs to me right away. Don’t forget that. It’s important.”
Laila left out nothing. She even warned them to keep contact with Thunder Pack’s people to a minimum. She didn’t want any
drama.
Bottom line, she was guarding against Shawn and Tiffany.
Rockie nodded, her voice steady. “We’ve got it, Laila. Don’t worry. We’ll keep Lillian safe.”
Laila nodded back. “Good. Just be careful. The Alpha families around here play by their own rules. This isn’t school. Let me explain…”
She trailed off, distracted by a sudden wave of stench that crept into the car, along with angry shouting.
Startled, Laila glanced over. Viola had her face pressed against the window, yanking up the curtain to peek outside.
Laila leaned in, curiosity getting the better of her. Through the glass, she recognized the street. They were right by Holt’s place.
Someone had dumped a load of manure on the front door. The culprit had just been caught, and the pack was dragging him inside.
Even as they hauled him in, the guy kept shouting, cursing Maris and spitting out insults about Margaret.
Viola let the curtain fall and turned to the others. “How is this still going on? It’s been days. I’d love to see Holt’s face right now–bet he’s either furious or completely done.”
Laila couldn’t help but agree. This whole mess had gone on way too long. Blackrock Pack still refused to make peace, so it looked like it would drag out even longer.
She wrinkled her nose. “Viola, why’d you open the curtain? Now the stink’s in here.” As soon as they turned the corner, Laila opened the window to air the car out.
Viola grinned, “Come on. I just wanted to see the drama. When a sleazy guy’s getting payback, I’m not missing it.”

Rockie sighed, a little too wistful. “Shame to waste all that manure. It would’ve been great for the garden.”
Bex nodded. “Yeah, people around here waste so much.”

A carriage rolled straight toward them from Main Street. Since Laila still had the window open, she caught the eye of a woman
inside.
Victoria sat in the other carriage and immediately barked, “Stop!”
Her driver hit the brakes, blocking Laila’s car.
Laila frowned. She watched Victoria step out.
Victoria wore a deep red velvet gown, a gold chain around her waist, and gemstones sparkling along the hem. In the morning light, she looked expensive and furious.
