Back when Samuel first took over Cottontail’s intelligence network from Callum, he had investigated every military officer and captured soldier who had ever been stationed at the Vagen Battlefield. Not a single one of them was named Cottontail.
Vaughn shook his head. “No one knows. The intelligence line was originally handled by General Conlay. Perhaps he knew Cottontail’s identity… or perhaps even he didn’t.”
“The fact that Cottontail managed to escape from a prisoner camp proves his combat ability is far from ordinary. He’s definitely not some average soldier.”
Samuel lowered his gaze in thought. When he had previously communicated through Cottontail’s channels, he had never attempted to probe the man’s identity. Naturally, even if he had asked, Cottontail would never have answered. Revealing his identity would have been fatal if the intelligence had been intercepted.
Samuel said firmly, “Your Majesty, Cottontail has provided us with invaluable intelligence and rendered great service to the kingdom. We must bring him back.”
Vaughn nodded. “That’s exactly why I want you to go personally. One thing is certain for now. He’s still alive. Ovila intends to use him to exchange for a city. According to Finneas‘ investigation, he’s being held somewhere in a prison near Ovila’s border city. The exact location remains unknown. You’ll need to locate where he’s imprisoned first… then find an opportunity to rescue him.”
Determination flashed through Samuel’s eyes. “Yes, Your Majesty.”
Vaughn sighed softly. “For now, Blake is stalling the negotiations. But the people of Ovila hate Cottontail deeply. He’s unlikely to be spared suffering.” He paused briefly before continuing. “And if the worst happens… whether dead or alive, bring him home. At the very least, we deserve to know who he was.”
Blake was Victoria’s elder brother. He’s the man currently commanding Samuel’s former army.
Samuel nodded. “I understand. I’ll depart tomorrow. I’ll make arrangements for the Justice Department before leaving.”
Vaughn nodded approvingly. “You must also be careful. Bring people you absolutely trust. And if the rescue truly becomes impossible, do not act recklessly. Understood?”
“Yes, Your Majesty.” Samuel replied.

Vaughn looked at Samuel for a long moment. This time, he was genuinely worried.
Sneaking alone into enemy territory was an extremely dangerous mission.
No matter how capable Samuel was, it was still too risky.

Yet aside from Samuel, Vaughn could think of no one else capable of accomplishing it.
Holt? A useless fool.
Finneas? Not sharp enough.
As for the other generals, they were even less dependable.
Only Samuel…
Vaughn slowly inhaled before speaking again. “As for Shawn, you don’t need to worry about him anymore. I’ve already dealt with the situation. As long as I remain on this throne, he’ll never hold an official position.
“I’ve also sent Walter to warn the Thunder Pack. They won’t dare bully Lillian again.”
“That’s great.”
Samuel’s expression softened slightly. “Thank you, Your Majesty.”
Vaughn waved a hand dismissively. “You’re my brother. Of course I’ll help you.”
Samuel smiled.
Vaughn studied him for a moment before saying, “Before you leave, remember to tell Laila. Don’t let her worry about you.”
“I will.”
The moment Laila’s name came up, Samuel’s lips unconsciously curved upward.
That unmistakable happiness in his eyes made Vaughn quietly press his lips together.
But in the end, he said nothing. He merely kept Samuel for a meal before sending him away.
There was still much to prepare before infiltrating Ovila.

After leaving the Royal Court, Samuel headed straight for the Silvermoon Pack.

Along the way, he passed through a marketplace and overheard a merchant talking excitedly. “I just made a huge deal recently. The Woodses bought a whole bunch of cottontails from me. Madam Woodses said her son loved cottontails the most.”
“Her son?” someone nearby asked. “You mean General Terrence, the one who died young?”
“Yeah.” The merchant sighed. “Such a pity. Only 25, and already gone. I heard they never even found his body.”
Another person sighed as well. “At least the war is finally over. Otherwise, who knows how many more people would’ve died.”
Samuel’s heart stirred faintly at those words. Then he quickened his pace toward the Silvemoon Pack.
Before entering the den, he glanced briefly toward the neighboring house on the left. It still appeared mostly uninhabited. Only then did he step inside.
After seeing Laila, Samuel briefly explained the rescue mission.
Laila’s brows immediately furrowed with concern. “Should I go with you? I won’t feel at ease if you go alone.”
