Samuel smiled. “Then I’ll be counting on you to save me, Ms. Livingston.”

Greer glared at him. “Cut the crap. I’m going out on patrol.”

“Be careful, Ms. Livingston.”

Greer scoffed as she stood up.

Be careful? In this border town, she could wander around alone all day, and nobody would even notice her.

After watching Greer leave, Samuel went back inside.

Woodrow was already handing out food–rye bread, sliced sausage, a few pieces of smoked pork shoulder, bowls of oatmeal mixed with honey, and watered–down ale.

William couldn’t eat meat anymore. His teeth were too weak to chew the tough smoked meat, so he could only soak the rye bread in warm water while Woodrow fed him spoonful by spoonful.

The room was quiet. Even the wind outside had died down.

It was the height of summer, and even Ovila–a border city usually buried in ice and snow during winter–felt unbearably hot and stuffy.

The only sound was the faint sound of chewing.

After everyone finished eating, silence hung in the room for a long time.

Finally, Terrence spoke up. He looked at Luke, his voice low. “Luke, can you tell me which Alpha she bonded with? Is his family treating her well?”

Luke gave him a sympathetic look. “She already chose someone else. Don’t ask anything

more.”

Terrence froze for a long time.

Outside the window, the night was dark like a wolf’s pupils.

At last, he lowered his gaze, as if he finally understood everything Luke had left unsaid.

Tired of reading, Laila looked out the window. The sky was bright blue. No wind. Just heat.

She wondered if it was just as hot over in Ovila. She also wondered how Samuel was doing and whether things were going smoothly for him.

For some reason, she couldn’t shake the uneasy feeling in her chest, like something bad was about to happen.

Nita told her she was overthinking it. She hadn’t smelled anything unusual. No danger, no intruders.

So Laila stopped bringing it up.

Just then, Viola came running in.

“Laila, did you hear? Shawn went back to Thunder Pack,” she said, bursting with gossip.

“I know.” Laila nodded. “I also heard he’s blaming Lillian and me for Tiffany leaving, and now he’s throwing a tantrum at home.”

She paused, the corner of her lips curling slightly, though there was no amusement in her expression. “Someone as arrogant as him could never accept being dumped. Even if he’s deceiving himself, he still has to convince himself first.”

Viola scoffed. “Rockie said he’s been bad–mouthing you around the mansion, saying you were the one who influenced Lillian. But all he does is make a scene at home. He doesn’t dare come after you directly. Seriously, let him try stepping foot into Silvermoon Pack. If he actually had the guts to do that, I’d actually respect him as an Alpha.”

“Lillian’s really been having a hard time during this pregnancy,” Laila said, feeling bad for her cousin. “At least she’s gotten stronger now.”

“Yeah. Shawn’s gone to her a few times to make trouble, but she stayed firm every time. The weird part is Mr. and Mrs. Whitmore. They’ve been stopping by every other day to see her, telling her to endure it and compromise. They keep saying Tiffany is gone, and as long as she calms Shawn down, life will get easier later. They’re also telling her not to break the mate bond.”

Laila rested her chin on her hand, frowning.

“That’s strange,” she said slowly. “The Whitmores aren’t short on money. Why are they so scared of their daughter breaking the mate bond?”

Viola shrugged. “Who knows?”
