Chapter 385 Holding On Until the End
Third–person POV:
“Then we’ll do it this way.”
After thinking for a moment, Greer realized they had no other choice left.

Samuel took the small bone flask from Greer’s hand. He pulled out the stopper and carefully fed the Wolfheart Marrow to William. It was an incredibly rare substance; the texture was watery and priceless beyond measure. It had been refined from the remains of ancient werewolf ancestors. Legends said it could build a bridge between life and death, holding a dying flame together just a little longer.
Originally, it had been prepared for Samuel. But now, William needed it more.
The liquid slid down William’s throat. His chest rose faintly, almost as if something inside him had been awakened again.
“Now,” Samuel said as he straightened up, his eyes sweeping across everyone’s faces, “this is a gamble.” He paused briefly. “We have to reach Aurilles within two hours. Even if we know we can make it there. We still can’t be sure Rowan will arrive in time.”
“Yeah,” Flynn lowered his head sadly. “She’s traveling with an Omega, after all.”
Samuel shook his head. “No. They probably split up and left everything.”

Before leaving, Samuel had Luke and Woodrow lie down inside the carriage. A thick padded blanket was

wrapped one arm tightly around him.
That way, the rough road would shake him less, and it would keep him from being thrown around during
the ride.
The gamble had begun. They set off immediately.
With three people already inside the carriage, the medic had to ride horseback to keep the speed up. If anything happened, Luke would call for him at once. Inside the carriage, the heat quickly became unbearable.
The two men were covered with a padded blanket, with William lying between them. Before long, sweat soaked through their clothes. Soon even their hair was drenched, sticking to their skin in itchy strands they couldn’t even scratch.
Every now and then, the driver lifted the curtain slightly to let in some air. But never for long. Someone with a fever couldn’t be exposed to cold wind.
The horses raced faster and faster. The carriage rocked violently over the rough roads, sometimes tipping sideways, sometimes crashing over deep ruts. But with Luke and Woodrow holding William tightly in place, the shaking didn’t hurt him too badly.

From time to time, Luke checked William’s pulse. As long as it was still beating, he could breathe a little easier.
At the same time, Stick was leading Rowan’s group toward Aurilles at full speed.
When they were less than a hundred miles away, a heavy storm suddenly crashed down on them.
They stopped briefly beneath an abandoned hunter’s shack to avoid the rain and force down a few bites of dry food. Vale looked at Rowan’s pale, rain–soaked face and finally spoke up.
“Mentor, we’ve been traveling at full speed this whole time. At this pace, we’ll probably reach Aurilles before they do. Why not rest a little and wait for the storm to pass?”
Rowan’s eyes darkened instantly, cold and sharp like wet steel.
“No.” Her voice was calm but absolute. “I’d rather we arrive first and wait for them there, than let them arrive and fail to find us.”
Darell swallowed hard. His eyes had already turned red. “Thank you, Dr. Sagewood. I’ll never forget this kindness for the rest of my life.”
Rowan waved him off impatiently and said bluntly, “What’s the point of saying that now? Eat faster. Once we finish, we move again.” Her gaze turned hard. “From here on out, as long as we still have the strength to run, we do not stop.”
The moment she finished speaking, the sky split apart. Silver lightning tore through the clouds. Thunder rolled across the heavens a second later, deep and heavy like the roar of a giant beast. Black storm clouds swallowed the last traces of light from the world.
Rain poured down in sheets.
Several wolves burst out from the shack. Their four legs tore through the storm as they ran at full speed into the wind and rain. Water exploded off their fur in white sprays. In the darkness, their glowing eyes looked like stars refusing to go out.
Luckily, not a single drop of rain fell where Samuel’s group was.
By nightfall, they finally reached the meeting point.
Samuela off his moving like a shadow. He rushed into the old stone house, his boots striking
the doorway with heavy thuds.
