William’s fever never went down. It burned inside him like a hidden fire buried deep in his bones, impossible to put out.

The medic carried a small portable stove and bundles of dried herbs wherever they went. Along the road, he constantly made fresh medicine for Williamsome to lower the fever, some to clean the wounds, others to help the injuries heal. He used every remedy he could think of, inside and out, but almost nothing worked.

The pills Rowan had left behind barely helped anymore. Still, they worked a little better than the emergency herbal medicine they were making on the road.

William woke up a few times during the trip.

Every time he opened his eyes, he asked the same question. Is thisour land?

And every time, someone answered him. Yes. This is our home. Vagen. You made it back.

Then William would force a faint smile onto his face. That tiny movement used all his strength. After that, his eyes would close again, and he would sink back into darkness.

Privately, the medic warned Samuel that if the fever continued this way, William’s brain could suffer permanent damage.

Later, Samuel simply handed his horse to Woodrow and climbed into the

wagon himself.

Even though William was unconscious, Samuel stayed beside him, holding his hand gently while speaking to him in a low voice.

He told him how beautiful Vagen was. The wind blew across the grasslands. The streams near the mountains. The red leaves covered the hills every fall.

He told him about his family. His father, mother, and older brother were all waiting for him at home.

And he told him about his mate. Sara was already on the way. She was rushing toward him as fast as she could. They would see each other soon.

Whenever Samuel spoke about those things, William’s breathing slowly steadied. Sometimes, he would suddenly open his eyes. A faint light would appear in them again. No longer empty. No longer lost.

He truly was holding on with his last bit of strength. He alive

When they were less than seventy miles from Aurilles, the group finally had to stop.

William’s breathing had become frighteningly weak. More air left his lungs than entered them.

The medic jumped down from the wagon, despair written all over his face. Your Highness, I’ve done everything I can. I used every medicine we had. Tried every treatment I know.

The men from Cottontail stood together in silence, forming a circle around the wagon.

Their eyes were red. Their throats were tight with emotion. But nobody dared to pull back the wagon

curtain.

Nobody dared to look.

They could not bear to see William reduced to skin and bones, his body covered in countless wounds.

One glance would shatter their hearts.

Samuel slowly turned toward his mentor.

Greer met his gaze and stayed silent for a long time. Then she let out a deep sigh, one that seemed pulled from the bottom of her soul.

There is one more way,” she said quietly. But this is the final option. You already knowif we give him Wolfheart Marrow and use the wolf’s power to protect his heart, he may survive another two hours at most. She paused. And after those two hours, if we still haven’t reached Aurilles or if Dr. Sagewood isn’t there when we arrive, then there truly will be no saving him.

Samuel nodded slowly, grief filling his eyes.
