Rowan only needed one glance at William to understand the situation. Right now, the most important thing was keeping him alive.
“Frostvine,” she said, holding out her hand.
Vale immediately pulled out a glass vial wrapped in three layers of deerskin from deep inside the case and carefully handed it over.
Rowan uncorked it. Using a blade, she sliced off a paper–thin piece of the vine. Then she lifted William’s chin and pushed the softened piece into his mouth, forcing him to swallow it.
“Injection.” Vale already had a long glass syringe ready.
Inside was a pale golden liquid, clear as water, glowing faintly amber under the candlelight.
Rowan took it and ordered someone to remove William’s shirt. Her eyes swept quickly over his chest, now so thin his ribs showed through his skin. She chose a vein slightly left of his heart.
The medic hesitated before speaking quietly. “Rowan… his body’s already at its limit. If you give him that shot now, isn’t it too dangerous?”
“Yes,” Rowan answered without even looking up. The needle slid precisely into the vein as her thumb slowly pushed the plunger down. “It’s very dangerous. But if we don’t do this, he has no chance at all.”
As the medicine entered his body, she spoke again. “Snowpetal Pill.”
Vale had already taken the pill out and placed it on his palm.
Rowan glanced at it, then frowned slightly and turned to Samuel, “Crush it. Hurry.”
Without a word, Samuel crushed the pill between two fingers.

Vale handed Rowan a slim silver spoon. She carefully fed every bit of the powder into William’s mouth, then poured in a small sip of warm water to help him swallow.
Lark, Darell, and Stick rushed in at that moment.
Darell pushed desperately through the crowd, but before he could even reach the bed, Rowan’s sharp voice stopped him cold. “Stay back! Just call out to him, Tell him you’re here, then get outside.”
Darell froze.
He stared at the man lying on the bed, like a thousand steel needles pierced
thin and hollowed out he barely looked human anymore. It felt
through his heart. He hurt so badly he forgot how to breathe.

“William-” His voice shook as tears streamed down his face. “It’s me, your big brother. It’s me. I’m here.” That cry cut through William’s fading consciousness like a dull blade tearing open the darkness.
His eyelashes trembled. Then, slowly, he opened his eyes. There was light in them again. Weak/light. Faint as the last candle flame in a storm. But it was there.
Still, he was exhausted.
He had held on for far too long. His willpower had already burned down to the last scrap. There was nothing left to force out.
The rest depended on Rowan now. On her hands. On the medicines packed inside all those bottles and jars.
“Everyone except Vale and Lark-”
Rowan’s temper always turned terrible when a patient was in critical condition.
Her voice scraped through the room like steel against metal. “Move back five steps. Anyone who gets closer, don’t blame me for what happens.”
Everyone obeyed immediately.
The master and her two apprentices, along with the medic, gathered around the bed and began cleaning the wounds. Every infected cut had to be treated one by one. Dead flesh was scraped away. The wounds were washed with medicine, then covered with Moonleaf cream to stop infection and bleeding.
Every cut felt like carving into living flesh.
William’s fingers were horribly swollen, shiny and bloated like sausages. When Rowan gently squeezed one, pus and yellow fluid leaked from beneath the nail.
That kind of pain was beyond what a person should have to endure.
William’s entire body shook violently, like a dead leaf caught in a storm. Tears slid uncontrollably from
wanted to cry. His body simply couldn’t endure the pain the corners of his eyes. It wasn’t because he
anymore.
Five steps away, nobody could bear to watch.
Darell braced one arm against the doorframe and buried his face into it, crying silently. His shoulders trembled hard, but he didn’t dare make a sound.
He couldn’t watch. He really
Ouldn’t.
Every cut on William’s body felt like another blade twisting into his own heart.
For one brief moment, he felt relieved Sara hadn’t come. If she saw William like this, she would probably collapse from crying
