Every infected sore was cleaned out. Each wound was washed carefully, then rinsed from head to toe with a special medicinal solution. After that, Moonleaf cream was spread over every injury, and clean gauze wa wrapped around him layer by layer.
Rowan prepared two kinds of medicine.
One was for external use- -a dark brown wash stored in a clay jar. It would be used to keep the wounds cleaned twice a day.
The other was for internal use–a pale golden liquid kept inside a glass bottle. It had to be warmed first, then fed to him spoonful by spoonful.
Vale and Lark had carried herbs with them the whole way here. Rowan had sent word ahead by messenger bird, so all the medicine had already been prepared.
Vale lowered the glass bottle into hot water. After a while, she took it out and tested the temperature with the back of her hand. Then she poured the warmed medicine into a glass and handed it to Lark. Lark fed William one spoonful at a time. She waited for him to swallow each mouthful before giving him the next.
That entire night, everyone stayed awake except Greer.
They were already exhausted beyond words. Every bone in their bodies ached. Their eyelids felt as heavy as bricks. But Rowan had said tonight was critical. If William made it through the night, he would at least have a ten percent chance of surviving.
Ten percent.
Such a tiny number. A number that made people panic just thinking about it.
Rowan spread a blanket on the floor and lay down without even changing clothes.
She had pushed herself to the limit rushing here.
Lark and Vale took turns standing watch. One guarded for an hour, then switched with the other. Neither dared relax for even a moment.
Throughout the night, they fed William medicine five times. The first time, they managed only two or three spoonfuls. By the fifth

A little after two in the morning, Rowan pushed herself up from the floor. She checked William’s pulse and touched his forehead. Then she took a small glass vial from her medical kit and gently blew the powder inside into his nose. She said it would help lower the fever

The dark circles under her eyes hung heavily on her tired face. She looked like she had aged ten years. overnight.
According to Darell, they had been travelling at full speed this entire time, resting at most two and a half hours a day.
Lark and Vale were young. They could handle it.
But Rowan was already in her fifties. Her body was clearly struggling to keep up.
Before dawn, Rowan checked William’s pulse again and pressed the back of her hand against his forehead. Then she straightened up and glanced at the crowd of bloodshot eyes staring at her around the room.
“He made it through the night,” she said calmly.
The room fell silent. No one could believe what they had heard.
“But don’t celebrate too early,” Rowan continued. “The fever breaking only proves the treatment is working. We still need to observe him longer. Anyone who wants to go home can leave. If you don’t want to leave, then find something to do. Stop standing here staring at me. You’re making me nervous too.”
After hearing that, everyone finally let out long breaths of relief.
They had survived one hurdle.
After sunrise, Greer left.
She had to hurry back and continue researching the curse. Samuel had used the deepest power within the curse without permission, and it would shorten his lifespan. That problem could not wait.
Samuel walked her to the front of the inn. Greer patted his shoulder. Her hand was thick and warm, just like every time she comforted him after he fell as a child.
“Don’t worry,” she said. “He’ll be okay.”
Samuel nodded. He believed that too.
Greer shifted forms. The giant gray wolf shook
out its fur in the morning light and ran off without looking
back. “Thank you, Teacher!” Samuel shouted after her.
The road outside was still damp from the rain, too wet to kick up any dust. Only the sound of her running grew farther and farther away until her familiar figure disappeared completely.
Samuel sat down on the steps outside
the inn.
He missed Laila.
