Chapter 403 My Mother Looks Like Her

Third–person POV:

Chloe let out a bitter laugh. “Things like that have happened countless times in that place.

“I originally had a little brother. When my mother was pregnant with him, she already knew it was a boy. She understood my father couldn’t protect her, so she wanted to escape. She knew Extelle would never allow a mare child to live. Every baby boy born there was doomed from the start. But Estelle had people watching her the entire time. Once we step into the Frostfang Pack, the only way out is as a corpse.”

Chloe wiped away her tears. “My father promised he’d help her escape. My mother believed him and waited for him to find an opportunity. She waited until she was nearly due. Finally, one chance came–Estelle had gone out to a banquet and wouldn’t be back until very late.”

It sounded like the plan failed.

Viola was furious. She clenched her fists tightly, and her breathing became heavy.

“She got out,” Chloe whispered shakily. “But they caught her halfway and dragged her back. She gave birth to my little brother in the carriage. They didn’t even cut the umbilical cord in time. After they got back to the den, they dragged my mother and my brother across the ground the whole way back. They kept dragging until all the skin on my brother’s body had been scraped off. He was covered in blood and torn flesh. They only stopped after he died.”

She looked up at Laila, smiling miserably.

‘General Conlay, you’ve never seen my mother. You’ve never seen the other breeder she–wolves either. If you had, you’d understand why Estelle treated them that way.”

A terrible realization struck Laila all at once. Goosebumps erupted across her skin.

Her voice dropped low, carrying a horrifying certainty. “They… all looked a lot like my mother, didn’t they?”

Tears slid down Chloe’s face.

“Yes. My mother suffered like this because she looked almost like Mrs. Conley Estelle gathered every woman she could find who looked like Mrs. Conlay and forced them to become breeder she–wolves for my father. She humiliated them, tortured them, and poured every bit of hatred she had for Mrs. Conlay onto those women.”

Laila’s fists clenched so tightly that her knuckles turned white, veins pulsing across the backs of her hands. A ruthless glint flashed through her eyes.

Viola’s face had gone livid. Through gritted teeth, she spat out, “I want to kill her!”

Samuel reached over and wrapped his hand around Laila’s clenched fist, his warm palm covering hers.

Then he turned to Chloe, his voice steady. “What’s your mother’s name? And what connection does she have to the Chandlers the maid mentioned?”

“My mother… is also named Diana,” Chloe said quietly. “The Chandlers are my mother’s family. Estelle threatened them and teinpted them with benefits. Besides, they’re merchants. There’s no way they could stand against Estelle.”
