Third–person POV:

“We normally aren’t allowed to leave our own courtyards” Chloe explained. “Whether it’s combat training or learning how to seduce men as my older sister did, everything happens inside the courtyard. As for the back courtyard, I’ve never been there myself But I overheard the servants talking. Apparently, something valuable is planted there. Estelle goes in several times every month. Sometimes even in the middle of the night. She never allows anyone to follow her.”

“What’s planted there?”

“I don’t know,” Chloe answered.

Laila frowned. There was no way it was as simple as growing plants. Otherwise, why would Estelle guard it so obsessively? It ooked like she would have to find an opportunity to investigate it herself.

‘You know how to fight?” Laila asked again

Chloe nodded. “That maid, Rosie, is my teacher. I trained under her for several years. Estelle didn’t raise us for nothing. If she keeps is alive, it’s because she plans to use us someday.”

aila nodded slightly. That much sounded believable.

Right now, my mother’s locked in the dungeon to keep my sister and me obedient. Before I came here, I saw her once. She was tarving so badly that she barely looked human anymore. I’m terrified she won’t survive much longer and just die there.”

Her voice caught again as she spoke.

After listening in silence for a moment, Laila finally said, “Go back. I knocked those three unconscious earlier. My people will search hem. They’ll search you as well.”

A search meant they were being cautious.

And from the maid’s perspective, it would look like Chloe had already gained part of their trust. After all, there was no way they would actually find anything.

“Then…”

“We’ll talk later,” Laila said flatly. “Right now, I still can’t fully trust you.”

Panic flashed across Chloe’s face. “But if you don’t keep me by your side, then this trip will have accomplished nothing. At least let me go to the Frostwind Pack. If I do, they’ll release my mother from the dungeon. They still won’t treat her well after that, but at least she’ll be fed.”

After Chloe left, Laila looked back at Samuel and asked again, “Should we keep het or not?”
