Lorena looked at her son’s heartbroken face, and her own chest ached with a deep, bitter sorrow.

“This is all my fault,” she said, her voice trembling. “If I hadn’t urged her to leave back then, she would still be your wife. Other families are reuniting, but you…”

Terrence’s eyes reddened further. His feelings for Victoria had been genuine.

But he could hardly blame her. For more than a year, he had vanished without a trace. Their mate link had gone silent. Of course she had thought he was dead. Of course she had moved on.

Now, all he could do was wish her happiness.

“Mom,” he said quietly, “I’m tired. I’d like to rest.”

“Tired? Of course. Go and rest immediately.” Lorena hurriedly wiped away her tears, “Once you’ve recovered, I’ll arrange introductions for you. There are many excellent ladies…”

“There’s no need.” Terrence gave a faint, bitter smile and shook his head. “Let it be. I have no intention of finding anyone else.”

Lorena stared at him in shock. “What do you mean, no intention? How can a person live entirely alone? You need someone beside you.”

“We can speak of it another time.” His voice remained soft, almost weary. “Mom, I don’t want to discuss this.”

Her voice shook as she pressed on. “Is it guilt? Is that why you won’t try again? Because you feel you wronged her?”

“Mother. I’ve only just returned, and you’re already pushing me about this. It isn’t the right time.”

She heard the loneliness beneath his words, that hollow, desolate quality that made her throat tighten. She had spent so long believing she would never see her son again. Now that he stood before her, she could let him have his way. What was the point of making him miserable?

Her tone softened immediately. “Then promise me one thing. Don’t go looking for her. Don’t ruin the life she has now.”

“I won’t.” The bitterness in Terrence’s expression deepened. “I promise. You don’t need to worry about it anymore.”

“That’s good.” Lorena nodded, though fresh tears spilled down her cheeks. “That’s good.”

The next morning, at Silvermoon Pack.

Chloe and Rosie arrived early to return the horses they had borrowed, bringing with them gifts of gratitude.

Laila did not receive them. She sent Viola Stone to entertain the visitors instead.

After departing Silvermoon, Rosie’s face twisted with displeasure. “We didn’t even get to see Laila.” She turned to glare at Chloe. “This is your fault. You’re far too passive. You should have come here more often, built a proper relationship with her.”

Chloe lowered her head apologetically. “I understand. I’ll try harder. But, teacher… could you speak to Princess Estelle for me? I want to see my mother. Once I’ve seen her, I’ll do everything I can.”

Rosie’s expression remained indifferent. “We’ll discuss it in a few days.”

Panic flickered across Chloe’s face. She dropped to her knees in the dirt. “Teacher, please. Just one visit. If you plead with the Princess, I will complete the mission. I swear it.”

Her voice grew strained with desperation. “Right now, I can still return to the Frostfang Pack. But if Prince Vance truly takes an interest in me, they’ll investigate my background. Once that happens, I won’t be able to see my mother even if I beg.”

Rosie remained unmoved. Chloe’s voice cracked, and something raw surfaced in her eyes, a mix of grief and indignation. “Even if you want me to risk my life for you, you need to offer me something in return. I can’t see my mother. I don’t know if she’s well. How can I give you my full devotion when I don’t even know if she’s alive and safe?”

Rosie frowned slightly.

Perhaps it was time to offer the girl something. Even the most obedient creatures could slip from one’s grasp if denied too long. But a daughter’s love was a powerful tether. Let Chloe witness her mother’s current circumstances with her own eyes, and she would fight all the harder to save her.
