Third–person POV:
Deep in Everpine Forest, a stream cut through the mountains. Water rushed down from higher up the cliffs and spilled over the rocks, forming a small waterfall. It wasn’t very tall, but the water was so clear it shimmered like glass. Whenever Terrence felt overwhelmed or couldn’t quiet the thoughts in his head, he came here. He would shift into his wolf form and run through the valley until his body gave out and his mind finally went numb.
Terrence had brought her here before.
Beth followed behind Victoria up the mountain trail. The farther they went, the quieter it became. Soon the only sounds left were the wind rustling through the treetops and birds calling deep in the forest/
Beth started getting uneasy, her eyes darting nervously toward the darker parts of the woods.
“Luna, where are we going? This place is so secluded… what if we run into Rogues?”
Victoria’s breathing was also uneven, but not because she was tired. She was a Beta. A hike like this was nothing to her. Her heart was beating too fast, pounding hard enough to make her chest ache.
She shot Beth a cold look. “No matter who you see today, you keep your mouth shut after we get back. Got it?”
“I won’t say anything. I promise.” Beth quickly shook her head, but the worry on her face still hadn’t faded. Luna had secretly come all the way out here to meet someone behind Alpha Holt’s back… Beth didn’t know much, but even she understood how dangerous that was.
Victoria ignored her and kept walking.
By the time they reached halfway up the mountain, the sound of the waterfall was already echoing through the forest.
The crashing water pounded against her ears like it was slamming straight into her chest over and over again.
Her steps slowed.
Her heart was pounding.
Would he be here?
And what if he wasn’t? What if he wasn’t, and she’d spent the whole night barely sleeping, dragged herself out of bed before dawn to wash up and make herself look nice, then hiked all this way through the mountains… only to end up making a fool of herself?
She took a deep breath, gritted her teeth, pushed aside the branches blocking the trail, and followed the narrow path beside the stream.
A few years ago, when she’d come here before, this trail hadn’t existed. Back then, the whole area had been
covered in wild grass nearly up to her waist. He had grabbed her hand, wrapped one arm around her waist, and carried her over the grass in a single leap. The feeling of leaving the ground like that had been thrilling and completely new to her. Later, in that field of grass, they had… Victoria suddenly shook her head hard, forcing those memories away.
As she rounded the bend, the view in front of her suddenly opened up.
Water sprayed into the air, mist drifting everywhere. A man was shifting back from wolf form into human form, stepping out of the stream while water rolled down the muscles of his back.
Every drop of blood in Victoria’s body rushed straight to her head.
He’s really here.
He’s actually here.
She reached up and touched the rose tucked beside her ear, took a shaky breath, then turned toward Beth. “Stay here. Don’t follow me.”
Beth’s face instantly turned pale. She had already noticed the man standing in the distance—tall, broad- shouldered, shirtless, and completely unfamiliar to her.
“Ma’am…” Beth’s voice wavered. “This doesn’t feel right. If Alpha finds out—”
“Quiet.” Victoria shot her a cold look over her shoulder, sharp enough to make her flinch. “As long as you don’t say anything, nobody’s going to find out. Stay here.”
The roar of the waterfall was deafening, but Terrence still heard the footsteps.
Years of living as a scout had carved that kind of awareness deep into him–something instinctive now. Even here, standing near the rush of a waterfall, newly back in a human shape, nothing slipped past him.
