Chloe had passed them a note through someone, asking them to meet here, saying she had something to discuss.

After Laila and Viola went inside, they met Hugo. His face looked pale, and even when he lifted his eyes, there was no real energy in them.

“Father, Ms. Conlay, and Ms. Stone are here,” Chloe said.

“I can see that,” Hugo replied flatly, studying Laila and Viola. “Have a seat.”

Laila and Viola nodded and sat down without hesitation.

“Chloe told me you’re willing to help rescue her mother.” Hugo got straight to the point. “What’s your plan? I need to know.”

Laila looked at him. “How about you tell me this first. How many breeders did Estelle buy for you? How many children did they have? And how many died?”

There was nothing in Alpha Hugo’s eyes. “More than ten. Maybe twenty. As for how many children… I don’t know. I stopped counting. If we’re talking daughters, the ones I’ve actually seen… just these few.”

“What do you mean, you stopped counting?”

“They died. A lot of them died. I don’t want to remember.”

He suddenly looked up, something burning in his eyes. “Just like I imagine you don’t want to remember how your father, your brothers, your family died.”

“Don’t doubt me.” Hugo’s voice began to shake, not from fear, but from hatred that had been buried too long. “I hate her more than any of you do. That woman. I want to rip her throat out with my own hands and feed her heart to the Rogues.”

His grip tightened on the armrest until his knuckles went white.

“But until I know your plan, I won’t take that risk.”

The hatred was real. Heavy enough to choke on.

“I do.” He looked at Chloe, something soft flickering in his eyes. “Even if tdie, I won’t let anything happen to her.”

Chloe’s eyes reddened. “Father, if it means saving Mother and bringing that woman down, I’m ready to die.”

Hugo reached out and pulled her closer, his voice gentle but firm. “Don’t be silly. I’m doing this so our family can live, not so you can throw your life away.”

“Father.” Chloe buried her face against his knee, her eyes shining with tears. “I’ve waited for this day for so long. I just want you and Mother safe. I want to stay by your side, with Claire.”

Hugo’s eyes grew damp as well. He stroked her hair. “All right, that’s enough. Get up. Don’t let Ms. Conlay see you like this. You’re. not a child anymore.”

Chloe wiped her tears and stood. “I’m sorry. That must’ve been embarrassing to watch.”
