The lingerie had been a birthday gift from her best friend, who had playfully suggested she wear it to give Zachary a night he’d never forget.
But the truth was, she and her ex had never actually crossed that line.
Blushing furiously, she slipped her sleepwear over it. Outwardly, it just looked like a standard summer robe, but she had incorporated a little strategic planning.
Fully dressed, she stepped out of the bathroom to find him sitting on the sofa. A bottle of red wine and two elegant glasses rested on the table in front of him.
Seeing her emerge, his eyes darkened. "Baby, come here," he said softly.
She looked at him.
There was that nickname again. Compared to "darling" or "honey," hearing him say "Baby" with that smooth, faint Docksy drawl was undeniably captivating.
She walked over.
He opened the wine and poured a splash into both glasses. As she sat down beside him, he handed one to her. "We haven't done a proper wedding toast yet."
Her cheeks warmed as she took the glass. He held his own glass and looked at her, gently wrapping his arm through hers. She mirrored his movement.
Leaning in close, they performed a traditional linked-arm toast, both taking a small sip.
But as he lowered his glass, the rim accidentally bumped against hers with a soft clink. A splash of dark red wine spilled directly onto her chest.
"I'm sorry. Let me help you."
"It's fine, I can do it myself—"
He looked at her and chuckled softly. "I caused the mess, so it’s only right that I clean it up."
Her face burned as she met his gaze.
He set his glass down on the table, then gently took hers and set it aside as well.
