Ask Zachary? He wasn't saying a word.
Ryan decided to call Yvaine directly.
"Yvaine, come hang out tonight," Ryan said with a laugh. "We're at the usual spot."
They kept a private VIP suite booked at this club year-round; it was their default gathering place.
Zachary watched Ryan intently.
"I can't," Yvaine replied. "I've got plans tonight."
Ryan froze. He shot a nervous glance at Zachary.
The guy was notoriously temperamental and often threw fits at Yvaine. More often than not, it was up to their friends to play peacemaker. They'd invite both of them out, crack a few jokes, and the two would naturally make up.
Yvaine should have been extremely familiar with this routine. She also knew perfectly well that Zachary had a volatile temper; without his explicit nod of approval, none of them would ever dare invite her out. This was his way of offering an olive branch, both to himself and to her.
In the past, she would always accept it without a fuss. So why today...?
Ryan opened his mouth to try again, but she cut him off. "Have a great time, guys."
With that, she hung up the phone.
Staring at the dead phone screen, Ryan felt his scalp tingle with dread. He didn't even dare look at his friend.
Zachary had no idea what was actually said on the call. Assuming that merely mentioning "the usual spot" meant Yvaine would come running in no time, he sat back, legs crossed, looking completely relaxed and smug.
Ryan was too terrified to break the news.
But if he didn't speak up now, and she simply never showed up... Zachary would figure it out eventually anyway.
"So, Yvaine..." Ryan started nervously.
Zachary looked over, an arrogant smirk playing on his lips.
"She's... tied up," Ryan braced himself. "She can't make it."
The smirk instantly vanished. Zachary scowled, staring blankly at Ryan.
Under that intense glare, Ryan went totally rigid.
