Meanwhile, Cassia stormed out of the council chamber, her heel striking the stone floor with sharp, angry echoes. James trailed after her, his hand half-raised as if to stop her but never quite daring to touch. She reached her car and spun on him. her chest heaving, eyes blazing like wildfire.
“Why did you stop me?” she snapped, her voice trembling with fury. “You should have let me kill her!”
James froze, stunned by the raw wrath radiating from her. He could feel it… years of grief, a mother’s pain finally given a face. The woman who murdered her child had laughed in her face, and he had pulled her back.
“I’m sorry,” he said quietly, his voice uneven. “I just… I didn’t want you to do something you would regret later.”
Cassia scoffed, a hollow, bitter sound. She shook her head, eyes glistening but refusing to break. Without another word, she yanked the door open, slid into her car, and slammed it shut. Tires screeched as she drove off, leaving James standing there with the weight of her pain pressing down on his chest.
He dragged a hand through his hair and glanced around the courtyard. Aiden’s car was gone. So was his father. The council members were dispersing, each slipping into their vehicles with heavy expressions. James exhaled and headed for his own. car, the taste of guilt still bitter on his tongue.
By the time his car pulled up to the Alpha’s mansion, he spotted Aiden’s vehicle already parked in the driveway. That meant Aiden was home and judging by the muffled roars leaking from inside, he was unraveling.
James pushed open the door and was immediately greeted by the sound of snarling, the crash of something shattering against a wall. He stopped, listening. Aiden’s fury rattled the very walls.
From the staircase, Alpha Alaric descended with a grim look on his face. The two men locked eyes, tension crackling between them.
“You should go to him,” Alaric said, his tone hard. “He needs his Beta.”
James raised his brows, almost scoffing. “What? No. I can’t talk to him right now. He doesn’t need me…he needs space.”
“When he’s like this,” Alaric pressed, “you’re supposed to ground him.”
James gave a low laugh, humorless. “When he’s like this, he doesn’t know who is who. He’d kill me before he even realized what he’d done.”
Alaric’s jaw tightened. He hated to admit James was right. Aiden rage tonight was feral. It was safer to leave him alone than risk becoming his next target.
Alaric turned to go, but then halted. He glanced back at James, his eyes narrowing. “Since when did you become Amelia’s Beta?”
James blinked, startled. “What?”
“I’ve seen you at her side lately. Too close. Too loyal. Did Aiden sign you to her?” Alaric’s voice sharpened. “Or did you take it upon yourself? Your duty is to my son, not some cheap liar whip crawled back into the pack to ruin everything”
James clenched his jaw, the words striking deeper than he wanted to show.
“If you’re tired of being his Beta, then say it,” Alaric continued celly, “Say it, and I’ll find someone to replace you”
Silence stretched. James said nothing, though his hands fisted at his sides.
“I want you to pack Amelia’s things,” Alaric finished. “By the time return, she should be gone. And hear me….Amelia is never to set foot in this mansion again.”

James stood rigid, fury burning through him. He hadn’t brought Cassia here. Aiden had. So why was Alaric lashing out at him instead of his own son? He exhaled sharply. forcing himself o calm. Alaric was Aiden’s father he had to respect that. But if he hadn’t been. James might have broken his jaw right there.
He shook off the thought and headed upstairs toward Aiden’s study. The roars had stopped, the silence heavy and suffocating.
James hesitated at the door, his hand on the knob. Then, after a long moment, he pushed it open.
The destruction hit him first. The table he’d replaced just days ago was in splinters. Aiden’s laptop lay smashed against the floor, books torn from the shelves and scattered like fallen leaves The little wine cellar was destroyed, broken glass and spilled liquor staining the ground. The air stank of blood, alcohol, and rage.
Aiden sat in the corner of the room. His broad frame hunched forward, his elbows on his knees, his hands clutching his head. His eyes were empty, hollowed out by grief.
James moved carefully, unsure if words would help or if they’d shatter him further.
“I’ll… I’ll get the maids to clean this up,” James said softly.
Aiden lifted his head. Tears tracked down his face. His voice cracked when he spoke. “Amelia was right. I failed Eva. I failed her, James. I failed my daughter. She was my little wolf and I failed her.”
James swallowed hard, his throat tightening.
“I was so blind,” Aiden rasped. “I harbored her murderer. I married her. I even had a child with her… What kind of father does that make me? What kind of Alpha am I?” His voice broke as he slammed a fist against his ground. “Tell me. James… what kind of father am I?”
James stared at him, helpless. No words could touch this kind of pain.
“No one would’ve suspected Sofia,” he tried gently. “She fooled everyone. At least she’s been caught now. She’ll face the punishment she deserves.”
“No punishment can undo what she’s done!” Aiden roared, surging to his feet. His body shook with fury. “She killed Eva. She sent men to kill Amelia. She made her lose my unborn child. She even dared to hurt Ethan. She destroyed everything I loved.”
His fist slammed into the wall. Bones cracked, blood blooming across his knuckles, but he didn’t even flinch.
James stepped forward. “Aiden…”
“I’m going to make her pay,” Aiden snarled. His eyes gleamed with fire, his wolf pushing close to the surface. “She will be sentenced to death by the same poison she used on Eva. And it will be done in front of the entire pack. They will see what happens to traitors.”
James’s breath caught. “You’re going to kill her?”
“Yes.” The word left Aiden’s lips like a vow.
“And Ethan?” James pressed. His voice cracked on the boy’s nam
For a moment, silence. Then Aiden’s shoulders sagged, his jaw tightening as though the words tasted like ash
“He’ll be fine without her,” Aiden whispered.
The room fell silent again, broken only by the drip of blood from his knuckles onto the ruined floor.
