“Now you will sit and listen to everything I have to say. And you will tell me the truth… or your son dies”
Cassia’s voice cut through the silence like a blade.

Sofia swallowed hard, her throat bone-dry. She lifted her chin and bit down on her trembling lip, trying to mask her fear with defiance. Hatred and anger flared in her eyes, embers of pride refusing to burn out.
She cursed herself silently. Sending Dante after Cassia had been her mistake. If she had gone herself, she would have finished her off completely.
Cassia leaned forward, her tone steady but burning with accusation. “I know you didn’t work alone. You never stepped foot inside that mansion while I was still there. Someone on the inside poisoned my daughter. Who was it?”
For a long moment, Sofia sat in silence. Then she gave a low, sharp laugh.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” she spat. “And even if I did…do you think I’d tell you? No. I’d let you rot in your search. Consider it my last gift to you.”
Cassia’s fist clenched against the table, knuckles whitening. Her voice dropped into something darker. “So you don’t value your son’s life, then? Remember….I’m the one in charge of his case. I could let him die without lifting a finger.”
A chill slid down Sofia’s spine. For the first time, her composure racked but only for a heartbeat. She forced a smirk, her words shaky but defiant. “That’s your threat? If I don’t talk, Ethan dies? You forget Aiden would never let that happen. He’d protect him with his life. He’d do anything to keep him alive.”
Cassia’s eyes narrowed. “Not if he learns the truth about Ethan.”
The smirk faltered. Sofia laughed nervously, but the sound rang hollow. “What truth?”
Cassia’s voice sharpened. “Are you really asking me that? You know exactly what truth you’ve been hiding for seven years.”
Sofia’s breath caught. For a flicker of a second, panic shot through her. Had Cassia found out? No. Impossible. She had made sure that no one would. She hadn’t allowed Aiden to drop his blood for the compatibility test. There was no way Cassia could know.
She forced herself to scoff. “You’re bluffing. I’ve never kept anything from him.”
Cassia clicked her tongue, unzipped her bag, and pulled out a file. She slid it across the table with one finger. The sound of paper against wood echoed in the tense room.
Sofia’s heart lurched. She picked up the file with stiff, cuffed hands, struggling to flip it open. Her eyes landed on the header:
DNA Test Result: Aiden Miller and Ethan Miller
The words blurred for a second before slamming into her chest ke a fist.
Cold sweat broke across her skin. “Wh-where did you get this?”
Cassia’s tone was calm, too calm. “Doesn’t matter.”
“This is fake,” Sofia snapped quickly, her voice higher than she tant it to be. “It has to be. Aiden didn’t give blood. I made
sure of it.”
Cassia’s lips curved into something cruel. “He did. Behind your ck. I know the truth now, Sofia. And if I tell Aiden, trust me, he will walk away. He’ll leave Ethan in that hospital bed to d. You’ll lose your son… and then your life.”

Sofia’s composure shattered. She swallowed hard, panic clawing her throat. “No… please. You can’t tell him. Ethan has to live. Please….save him.”
Cassia’s gaze was ice. “Then tell me who helped you poison my daughter.”
The words came out of Sofia before she could stop them. “Elena The cook. It was Elena.”
Cassia froze. Her lips parted in disbelief. “Elena?” The name tasted wrong, sour. Images of the woman flashed in her mind. Her gentle hands, her kind smiles, her loyalty beyond measure. Cassia had trusted her, treated her like family. Elena had been the one to bring her food, to make sure she was comfortable even when others whispered.
No. It couldn’t be.
“Elena would never,” Cassia whispered, shaking her head.
Sofia leaned forward, eyes wild. “You think I’d lie when I’m cornered like this? It was her. She’s the one you trusted most… that’s why you never saw it coming.”
Rage boiled in Cassia’s chest. She curled her hands into fists beneath the table, nails biting into her palms. Elena’s sweet face blurred into the memory of Eva gasping for breath, her small body going limp. If Sofia was telling the truth, then the betrayal cut deeper than any blade.
And if it was a lie… it was a cruel one.
Cassia’s voice shook with restrained fury. “You’ve given me a name. That doesn’t buy your son’s life.”
Sofia’s eyes widened. “What? I told you what you wanted! Save Ethan and you must not tell Aiden the truth. Please, Cassia. I’m begging you.”
Cassia slid the file back into her bag with slow precision, her expression unreadable. “In as much as I want to save your son…. I can’t.”
“What do you mean?” Sofia’s voice rose, shrill.
Cassia’s eyes locked onto hers. “Ethan’s blood type is rare. Only relative…someone truly close can be a match. And the only one who can save him is his father.”
Sofia blinked rapidly, color draining from her face. Her body sagged in the chair as though the truth itself had stolen her strength.
Cassia leaned closer, voice low, unforgiving. “So… you either tell me who Ethan’s real father is, and I’ll contact him. Or you keep your secret… and watch your son die.”
Tears welled in Sofia’s eyes, spilling down her cheeks. She shook her head violently, her chest heaving with ragged breaths. She couldn’t tell her. She couldn’t. If Dante ever discovered she ad hidden Ethan’s paternity from him, he would tear the world apart. And if Aiden found out…
It would be war.
And she wasn’t sure she would survive either one.
