Chapter 182
“Aiden was the one who brought us to the hospital,” Beta Greg said quietly.
Amelia froze mid-step. Her brows furrowed as she turned fully toward him. “Aiden?” she asked, her voice soft but edged with disbelief. “How did he even find you?”
Greg let out a weary sigh. “We were brought to him. I overheard one of the men who escorted us saying Alpha Aiden had saved us… in exchange for something. I don’t know what it was,” he murmured, rubbing the back of his neck, “but from what I gathered, he’s the reason we’re alive-and here, Amelia.”
She stared at him for a long moment, searching his eyes for any hint of deception. When she found none, she simply nodded, her throat tight, and turned to leave the room.
The moment she stepped out, the air in the hallway felt heavy-hick enough to choke on. She leaned against the wall, closing her eyes as her father’s words echoed over and over in her mind.
Aiden saved them… he saved her family.
Her chest rose and fell unevenly. How? Why?
Her mind flashed back to when she’d seen him earlier that day…is face, cold and distant, their voices clashing in anger. She had told him to stay away from her, to never interfere again. And yet… he had gone behind her back to save the people she loved most.
A tremor of guilt and confusion rippled through her.
She remembered Nurse Mira telling her that Alpha Aiden had requested special attention for some “important patients.” She hadn’t known it was her family.
“If he really saved them,” she whispered to herself, her voice breaking, “why didn’t he wait so I could thank him?”
Her fingers curled at her sides, nails digging into her palms. She bit her lower lip hard, fighting the sting in her eyes.
The sudden vibration of her phone made her flinch. She glanced at the caller ID-Damien. Her stomach twisted.
She stared at the phone while it rang, refusing to answer. It stopped. Then it rang again.
Still, she didn’t pick up. Instead, she slipped the phone back into her pocket and exhaled shakily. It was late, and she had wanted to go home-to see Damien, to hold Arthur-but she couldn’t leave her mother. Not tonight. She had to monitor her closely before administering the cure tomorrow.
Pulling her phone out again, she typed quickly:
I won’t be coming home tonight. Something came up. Tell Arthur I’ll be home tomorrow,
She hit send, then immediately switched off her phone before Damien could call again.
Her chest ached at the thought of her son, but she knew he’d bene. Damien would take care of him. She just needed one night…one more night here.
When she returned to the ward, two additional beds had been aanged beside her mother’s. Her father was lying on one. already asleep. Gloria was on the other, her breathing soft and en. The food she’d brought sat untouched on the table.
Amelia sighed quietly and moved closer to her mother’s bed.
“Dad,” she said, her voice still raspy with sleep.
“I didn’t want to wake you,” Greg said with a small smile. “You should go home and get some rest.”
She shook her head gently. “I will, Dad. But not until Mom’s better. I can’t leave you all here alone. Once she’s stable. I’ll find a new apartment for you, Gloria, and Mom to stay in.”
Greg’s smile faded. “Thank you, Amelia. But… no. We can stay in our old house.”
Her eyes softened with worry. “Dad, it’s too dangerous. What if the people who kidnapped you come back? I’ll arrange a safer place-somewhere they can’t find you. I’ll protect you.”
Tears shimmered in Greg’s eyes again. His shoulders trembled sightly as he looked at her. “I’m the one who’s supposed to protect you, Amelia,” he said brokenly. “I should’ve protected your mother and your sister too… but I failed. I failed all of you.”
Amelia’s heart clenched. Her father had always been a strong man, composed and proud. But now, standing before her, he looked fragile-shattered even. Like something deep inside hinhad finally broken.
She stepped closer and took his trembling hands in hers. “That’s not true, Dad,” she whispered. “You didn’t fail us. You did your best… and that’s enough.”
He nodded faintly, a small, sorrowful smile tugging at his lips as he sat back down on the bed. She watched him quietly, pity softening her features.
After a moment, she asked softly, “Do you have any idea who was behind all this?”
Greg hesitated. His eyes flickered-just for a second-before he poked away. “No,” he said too quickly, too quietly.
