Chapter 183

“Dad, you don’t have to hide anything… if you know something, tell me.” Cassia’s voice trembled slightly, her eyes searching his face for truth.

Beta Greg shook his head, exhaling a heavy breath that seemed to carry the weight of years. “I…” he started, but his gaze drifted toward Evenly’s still body on the bed. His brows furrowed suddenly.

“I think your mom just moved her hand,” he whispered, disbelief threading through his tone.

Cassia’s head snapped in his direction, her heart thudding against her ribs. Her breath caught as she saw her mother’s fingers twitch faintly against the sheets. For a moment she stood frozen-then instinct kicked in.

She hurried to the bedside, her pulse racing. Pulling out her stethoscope, she pressed it to her mother’s chest, listening closely. Her fingers moved swiftly and precisely…checking her pulse, her heart rate, her temperature. Everything was… stronger. Stable. Better than the night before.

Her gaze flicked to the IV line-the drip had finished. She’s improving. Relief flooded her chest, and with it, resolve. It was time.

Cassia reached into her coat pocket and pulled out the small vial of cure, the liquid glinting faintly under the dim hospital light. Her hands trembled slightly-not from fear, but from hope. She grabbed a sterile syringe from the nearby drawer, inserted the needle into the vial, and drew the shimmering serum inside.

“Mom…” she whispered, her throat tight as she swabbed Evenly’s arm with cotton. Her fingers lingered for a second on her mother’s cold skin before she gently inserted the needle. She pressed down the plunger, her eyes locked on her mother’s face as the cure slowly flowed into her veins, the faint golden like hue vanishing into her bloodstream.

When it was done, Cassia withdrew the syringe, pressed the cotton back on the puncture site, and held it there a moment longer than needed. Her voice came out low and steady. “Please work,” she murmured.

Beta Greg had been watching in silence, his hands trembling at his sides. “Is that… the cure?” he asked finally.

Cassia nodded, voice soft but sure. “Yeah.”

He took a cautious step closer. “So… she’s going to get better?”

“Yes,” Cassia said, meeting his eyes. “She will.”

Greg exhaled shakily, a tired smile breaking through the lines of worry on his face. Cassia’s gaze flicked to the wall clock. Almost eight. Her stomach knotted. Arthur would be getting ready for school by now-she hadn’t come home last night. He’d be worried sick.

“Dad, I have to go home to my son now,” she said gently. “I’ll be back soon. I’ll assign a nurse to check on Mom every few minutes until I return.”

Greg frowned slightly. “You have a son?” His voice was laced with surprise.

Cassia froze for a second, then nodded. “Yeah… I do.” She offered a faint smile. “I’ll be back.”

Before he could say more, she turned and hurried out of the way. Her footsteps echoed down the sterile hallway, the sound

of her heart pounding louder than her heels. She burst into theol morning ait, climbed into her car, and started the

engine. Tires screeched softly as she pulled out of the hospital parking lot and sped down the street.

When she reached her apartment, she barely remembered parking. Her heart softened instantly at the sight that greeted her inside-Arthur, sitting at the dining table, legs swinging under the chair, breakfast half-eaten.

“Mommy!” he exclaimed, his face lighting up.

Cassia’s heart melted. She barely had time to breathe before hen to her, small arms wrapping tightly around her waist. She bent to his level, hugging him fiercely and pressing a kiss to his temple.

“Oh, my sweet boy,” she whispered, running her fingers through his soft hair.

“Mommy, why didn’t you come home last night?” he asked, pulling back slightly, his little brows creased with worry.

Cassia sighed softly. “I’m sorry, honey. There was an emergency at the hospital. I couldn’t leave.” She tucked a stray curl behind his ear and smiled faintly.

This man… this was what she’d always wanted. Someone who loved not just her, but her son. Someone she could trust to protect them both without asking. Someone who would always choose her.

Cassia’s chest tightened.

She set her car keys on the dining table and took a slow step toward him.

“Cassia-” he began, but she lifted a finger and pressed it gently gainst his lips, silencing him.

His breath hitched.

Without a word, she took the lunchbox from his hand and placed it on the table beside the keys. Then she stepped closer. her body inches from his. Her hands slid up around his neck, fingers brushing the soft curls at his nape.

Their eyes locked-her gaze steady, his wide and uncertain. The pull between them was magnetic. The air felt electric.

Then Cassia tilted her head and pressed her lips to his.

It wasn’t a gentle kiss. It was desperate, emotional, filled with everything she hadn’t said-the exhaustion, the gratitude, the longing that had built between them for days.

Damien froze, his body tensing under her touch. His breath caught, heart slamming against his ribs. He didn’t move-not at first. He was too stunned, too overwhelmed.

Then, as if realizing what was happening, he broke the kiss abruptly, pulling back, his breath uneven. His eyes searched hers, confusion and desire flickering like firelight.

Cassia stood still, her chest rising and falling, lips parted, heart pounding.

The silence between them felt louder than any words could be.
