By the time Gloria returned with the doctor and nurses, Evenly ad stopped breathing. Blood soaked through her pillow, streaking across her pale skin like cruel red vines.
“Sir, ma’am, please-you need to leave the room,” one of the nurses said softly, her voice trembling as she reached for Beta Greg’s shoulder.
But he slapped her hand away with a growl that made her flinch His voice cracked through the air, raw and feral.
“That’s my wife over there! I’m not leaving!”
The nurse froze, her hands trembling as she backed away, fear flashing in her eyes. The air in the room thickened with grief and panic.
Greg’s chest heaved as he turned toward the doctor, who was already checking Evenly’s pulse. His heart pounded violently in his ears as his lips moved soundlessly in prayer-pleading to the Moon Goddess to let it be a mistake. He raked his hands through his hair, pulling hard, his breath ragged with frustration pain, and helpless rage.
The doctor bent closer, pressing the stethoscope against Evenly chest. One nurse wiped the blood away while another prepared the defibrillator.
“Get Dr. Cassia-now!” the doctor barked, grabbing the paddles.
“One, two, three, clear!” He pressed them to her chest. Evenly’s body jerked once… twice… nothing.
The beeping sound from the monitor drew out into one long, hunting line.
Everyone froze.
The doctor’s shoulders sank as he whispered, “Time of death.”
Gloria let out a strangled sob before collapsing to the floor, clutching her chest. “No! No, please-no!” she cried, shaking uncontrollably.
Greg’s entire world shattered. “Evenly!” he choked, rushing to her bedside. He grabbed her cold shoulders and shook her, his voice breaking. “We didn’t come this far for you to leave me ow! Please, wake up! Don’t do this to me, Evenly, please!”
His voice filled the ward, desperate and trembling. Tears streamed down his face as he rocked her limp body in his arins.
Meanwhile, in her office, Cassia sat at her desk, a peaceful smile laying on her lips. Her phone was in her hand as she thought of her mother…alive, safe, right here in the hospital. For the first time in a long while, her heart felt whole.
She dialed Seraphina’s number, excitement bubbling in her chest. She wanted to tell her everything-how she now had two mothers, how fate had given her back what she thought she’d lo
The phone rang. No answer.
She tried again, tapping her nails impatiently against the desk-ut stopped when a knock sounded on her door.
“Come in,” she said, standing.
The door opened, revealing a nurse breathing heavily as if she’d printed through the entire building. Her face was pale. eyes wide with fear.
“Doctor Cassia-there’s… there’s an issue,” the nurse stammered was told to get you right away.”
Cassia’s brows furrowed. “What’s going on?” she asked, already gabbing her coat. The urgency in the nurse’s tone made her heart twist uneasily.
As they hurried down the hallway, Cassia asked again, “What’s the emergency?”
The nurse hesitated, her lips trembling. “It’s… it’s your mother.”
And in that moment, realization slammed into her chest. Her eyes widened as a cold wave of horror washed over her. The
serum. The cure.
She had given her mother a second dose because the first hadn’t worked fast enough. She knew how strong it was…how dangerous an excess could be.
Her throat tightened painfully. I killed her.
Cassia blinked hard, trying to focus, but her vision blurred. Herembling hands slipped from the bedside, and she staggered a step back. Her legs felt weak, her chest hollow.
Her heart screamed inside her, but no sound came out.
“Doctor Cassia!” the doctor called, his voice distant and muffled if through water. She blinked, forcing herself back to reality.
They were waiting for her permission…to cover the body.
Her lips parted, but only a nod escaped her.
A nurse stepped forward and gently draped a white cloth over Evenly’s still form. Cassia’s gaze stayed fixed on the outline beneath the sheet. Her mother. Her heart. Her mistake.
She looked at her father-broken, motionless. Then at Gloria, whose cries grew weaker, soaked in disbelief.
Cassia turned away, every step she took heavier than the last. He fingers trembled as she reached for the door handle.
She walked out of the ward without a word her face calm, but her heart shattering into a thousand pieces.
